IDF Chief
Visits Poland

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
army chief of staff, Lt. Gen.
Ehud Barak, has begun a
four-day official visit to
Poland, the first ever by an
incumbent Israel Defense
Force chief to an Eastern
European country.
He is expected to announce
the opening of a military at-
tache's office at the Israeli
Embassy in Warsaw, the
first in an Eastern European
capital.
Lt. Gen. Barak will pay a
ceremonial visit to the site of
the Auschwitz death camp in
southeastern Poland. He
will be joined there by a
delegation of young IDF
soldiers, children and grand-
children of former camp vic-
tims, and survivors who are
flying out from Israel.
The chief of staff will meet
his Polish counterpart,
observe a Polish air force ex-
ercise and visit the naval
base at Gdansk.
The visit to Poland by the
Israeli general coincided
with the arrival in southern
Lebanon of the first con-
tingent of 80 Polish soldiers,
the first contingent Poland
has contributed to the
United Nations Interim
Force in Lebanon.

If you've tried to lose weight and can't get started, or you've
lost weight only to regain it quickly, the answer to your pro-
blem can probably be found in your emotional life.

People who are, or have been, in unfulfilling or abusive rela-
tionships use food to provide comfort and protection. People who
have difficulty asserting their needs tend to swallow food as quick-
ly as they swallow their anger.

Students
Are Exempt

New York (JTA) — Jewish
students in Romania will be
exempt from attending
school on Jewish holidays,
the World Jewish Congress
announced.
Education Minister Mihail
Golu agreed to the request
made by Chief Rabbi Moses
Rosen at a meeting last
week. Rabbi Rosen heads the
Federation of Jewish Com-
munities, the WJC's affiliate
in the country.
The exemption would app-
ly to Jewish students in all
schools through the univer-
sity level.
Mr. Golu also promised to
develop educational mate-
rial that would, for the first
time, introduce the teaching
of the Holocaust in
Romanian schools.
The subject of the Holo-
caust was forbidden for a
half- century by both the fas-
cist and Communist
regimes.
"As a result, we have a
total ignorance among the
majority of the people as to
the tragedy which created 6
million victims among the
Jews in Europe," Rabbi
Rosen said.
