DISCUSSION
BACKGROUND
Boy meets Girl. They fall in love and wish
to marry. All is fine until it is discovered that
she was born from a second marriage without
her mother having a GET from her first mar-
riage. The problem gets even more com-
plicated a generation or two later, with poten-
tially disastrous results. In fact, there are cer-
tain whole groups of Jews who are not al-
lowed to marry with all other groups of Jews
because they do not have the concept of

children. Children of the second marriage
would be considered illegitimate, and this
stigma would prevent their marriage. If they
in turn have children, this stigma continues
to the next generation. What might seem
unimportant to the original couple could
have serious repercussions in future
generations.
VOICE
VA AD
What makes this so unfortunate is that the
whole procedure to avoid this problem is fair-
ly simple. All we need is that the parties both
agree to it, and about one-and-a-half hours of their time.

WE ARE READY TO HELP
Civil divorce among Jews is unfortunately on the rise.
' The problem is that civil divorce does not in any way
negate the state of the marriage in Jewish law. The cou-

two witnesses who are Shomer Shabbps.
The Council of Orthodox Rabbis stands ready to assist
in the area of Jewish divorce. Our staff will deal sensitively
and promptly to help. For any further information call
Rabbi Chaskel Grubner.
What makes this issue more difficult is that it not only
affects the people directly involved, but also affects the
