Presidents of Major Ameri-
can Jewish Organizations
and the only woman to ad-
dress the crowd, offered her
prayers for the Rebbe's
health and praised the
movement for "keeping the
light of Judaism alive"
through Lubavitch centers
around the world.
Indeed, to symbolize the
organization's activities,
there were two large maps,
on either side of the huge
ballroom. One was of the
United States, with little
lights signifying Lubavitch
centers in each state, and
the other was of the world,
with similar lights flashing
in 38 countries, from Argen-
tina to Zaire. The center-
piece for each table was a
globe held aloft by the Heb-
rew letter, tzadik, which not
only stands for the number
90 but means righteous, or
holy person.
As for all of the recent
media attention regarding
the Lubavitch movement's
heralding the imminent
coming of the Messiah, an
emissary from California
put it this way: "The Rebbe
has always been ahead of his
time."
He noted that when the
Rebbe called for day schools
and intensive religious
training 40 years ago as the
best means of stemming
assimilation, he was mocked
by American Jewish leaders,
who only now are coming
around to the Rebbe's views
on Jewish education.
"Now the issue is Messiah,
and what's remarkable is
that Jews are talking about
a topic they had never
thought much about before."
Whether one was a
believer or a skeptic, the
evening was impressive in
drawing such a variety of
dignitaries whose admira-
tion for Rabbi Schneerson
seemed genuine.
"His life and his work
have been a blessing," noted
Mr. Wiesel, "and we are all
his disciples." 11]

on the walls of the syn-
agogue of Bayonne in
southwestern France last
week.
