CELEBRATE ISRAEL!

44 Years of Statehood • 25 Years of a Reunited Jerusalem

Meredith Baxter, Louise
Fletcher and Morgan Fair-
child.
Presidential hopefuls
Jerry Brown and Bill Clin-
ton took time off from New
York campaigning to march
for choice. U.S. Rep. Sander
Levin, D-Southfield, state
Rep. Maxine Berman, D-
Southfield, and state Sen.
Lana Pollack, D-Aim Arbor,
took part in the demonstra-
tion.
Timing for the march,
sponsored by the National
Organization for Women
and other abortion rights
groups, was pivotal. The
U.S. Supreme Court is ex-
pected to hear a Penn-
sylvania case on April 22
that could severely limit a
woman's access to abortion.
Abortion rights foes
countered the march, estab-
lishing a mock graveyard
nearby with thousands of
white crosses representing
tombstones for the fetuses
they say were killed by abor-
tions.
Supporters of choice fear
the 1973 Supreme Court Roe
vs. Wade decision that made
abortion legal nationwide is
in danger, and they are
angry at President George
Bush, who has vowed to veto
the Freedom of Choice Act
now moving through Con-
gress.
The demonstrators warned
that abortion won't stop if
the High Court outlaws it.
Before the landmark Roe
decision, many women
underwent illegal abortions.
As a teen-ager during the
prohibitive era, Ms. Lipner
nearly died from a back-
alley procedure.
She tells people she was
lucky she didn't die. Later,
after she married, she was
lucky to give birth. Because
of the drugs she was given
after the abortion, she says
her daughter may never be
able to bear children.
On a ride to the rally from
Dulles Airport to the
capital, several Jewish wo-
men told their personal
stories. On the buses from
Detroit, others swapped
tales.
One woman said she got
pregnant while her husband
was a young medical stu-
dent. They couldn't afford
the child. Abortion was il-
legal in the United States, so
they hopped on a plane to
Jamaica for the procedure.
"You don't know what it is
really like unless you've felt
that fright from a back-alley
abortion. It was unclean. I
don't know what kinds of
drugs they gave me. You
think about dying.
"That experience provided
