ashington, D.C. —
The scene at Union
Station on the eve
of the nation's largest dem-
onstration in two decades
was all too familiar to
Southfield's Pearl Lipner.
The podium was packed
with speakers from Con-
gress, the U.S. Senate, abor-
tion rights groups,
Hollywood stars and fem-
inist Gloria Steinem. One
state's delegation was han-
ding out placards stating,
"Another Voter For Choice."
Linda Soberman of Hun-
tington Woods gathered a
stack of placards, enhancing
them for her friends by ad-
ding "Michigan" in bright
green or red letters. She put
aside two signs for her
daughters, Lisa and Tracey
Jackier, who were meeting
her on Sunday for the March
For Women's Lives.
Arlene Victor of Bloom-
field Hills was taking in the
excitement. Her husband,
Steve, in town representing
Michigan for the American
Israel Public Affairs Com-
mittee conference, was going
to march with her.
Ms. Lipner was energized,
yet she was mad. She was
happy her daughter, Lisa
Lipner Drostova, 22, flew in
from San Francisco so they
could rally together. But she
couldn't believe she was go-
ing to do this again.
"I already did this so Lisa
Wouldn't have to," said Ms.
Lipner, a business owner
who works part-time for
Planned Parenthood, Inc. "I
worked for this over 20 years
ago. I've had a long time to
get angry."
Detroit's Jewish commun-
ity was well-represented at
the 500,000-person rally,
said to rival Martin Luther
King's 1963 March on Wash-
ington and anti-Vietnam
war demonstrations. Group
organizers said the crowd
was larger, nearing the
700,000 mark.
National Jewish groups,
including the Union of
American Hebrew Con-
gregations, the National
Council of Jewish Women,
"I worked for this
I've had a long time
to get angry."
Pearl Lipner
Pioneer Women, Hadassah,
the B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization, along with the
Religious Coalition for Abor-
tion Rights, also stood with
banners and signs.
Tht platform of speakers
was endless. All of the wo-
men's movement's favorites
seemed to be on hand: Jane
Fonda, Mary Travers (who
also sang a few songs with
her partners in the Peter,
Paul and Mary group), Ms.
Steinem, Bella Abzug,
Backlash author Susan
Faludi, former vice presi-
dential candidate Geraldine
Ferraro, who is running for
U.S. Senate in New York,
former San Francisco Mayor
Diane Feinstein, Colorado
Rep. Patricia Schroeder,
Maryland Sen. Barbara
Mikulski and actresses
