mending the world, as an
important basis for
Reform's deep interest in
social action.
"Our goal is to show that,
as Jews, we can express our
Jewishness and our
responsibility to help the
world," she said. "It's im-
portant that we look at
what we do and make sure
that we and our children
understand the Jewish
connections behind helping
in the areas of the envi-
ronment, the homeless and
programs such as Building
Bridges."
Nobody disputes the
work the movement has
put into gear in the area of
social action. The one res-
urfacing criticism of the
movement is change.
Reform's decisions to or-
dain women as rabbis and
cantors, to allow
patrilineal descent and to
involve non-Jewish spouses
in temple activities has
brought the movement's
intentions in question by
the Orthodox and Conser-
vative.
Cantor Hirschenfang
sees all of these changes as
a focus on truth and ra-
tionalism.
"Reform Jews who take
themselves seriously are
among the most committed
Jews in a community,"
Cantor Hirschenfang said.
"And Reform Jews ought
not to feel any less Jewish.
The move to recognize
patrilineal descent is a
move of forward thinking
for the Jews of now and the
coming century. The very
nature of American Jewish
life is in itself going to be
very unique and very spe-
cial. One cannot ignore the
overwhelming state of
intermarriage in this coun-
try, and Reform sought a
way to involve the inter-
married family.
"The issue of children of
intermarriages is very im-
portant," she continued.
"The statistics are showing
that a majority of Jewish
men are marrying non-
Jewish women. And
Reform showed a tremen-
dous amount of foresight in
finding a way to bring
these children into the
community."
Rabbi Dannel I. Schwartz
of Temple Shir Shalom said
he's had congregants who
have expressed a need to
form a personal relation-
ship with God, but can't ac-
cept the structure they re-
membered as a child.
"Because you don't wear
a yarmulke or do wear one
does not make you a better
Jew," Rabbi Schwartz said.
"If as a rabbi I can teach
you to connect yourself
with a better self, and if
you're willing to do mitz-
vahs, then I've introduced
you to the presence of the
Almighty. Reform is a
belief in Jewish people, not
a belief in religious prac-
tices."
Or as Dr. Gad-Harf said,
"Reform works hard to
make sure that nobody is
left out. It makes Reform a
place to come home to." ❑

Farrakhan Denied
British Entry
London (JTA) — Louis
Farrakhan, the American
Black Muslim leader given
to anti-Semitic slurs, has
again been denied entry to
Britain.
The head of the Chicago-
based Nation of Islam has
been barred, in fact, since
1988, when an exclusion
order was issued by the
government's Immigration
and Nationality Depart-
ment.
A spokeswoman for the
department told Mayor
Gerry Ross of Hackney, a
borough of London, that "the
order has been in effect since
then and will remain so for
the foreseeable future."
Mr. Farrakhan was
originally barred after
members of Parliament and
Jewish leaders protested his
plans to hold meetings in
Hackney, which has large
Jewish and black popula-
tions.
A second attempt to bring
him to Britain was announc-
ed early this year by Lee
Jasper, a black activist from
South London.
The black newspaper, The
Voice, claimed last week
that another senior figure of
the Nation of Islam, Dr.
Khallid Abdul Muhammad,
was planning to come to
Britain in Mr. Farrakhan's
place.
