ty. (In fact, he is married to
Ruth, administrator for Sen.
Carl Levin's Detroit office.)
The late Hyman Broder
may have been one of the
first Jewish Republicans. No
written information is
available, and political in-
siders can only offer brief
tidbits on the matter. (When
did Jews in Michigan enter
the Republican Party? Let
us know what you think.)
Hyman Broder was
philanthropic, active in the
Jewish community and a
supporter of the concept of a
Jewish state. Yet he differed
from most Jews, who adored
the Democratic FDR.
In the early 1900s, when
Jewish immigrants
journeyed en masse to the
United States from Europe,
most held little interest in
the American political
scene.
But when they did get into
politics, they gravitated
toward the Democratic Par-
ty, which they hoped would
cater to the social and do-
mestic needs of the poor and
the working class.
It's Miller Time
The Miller family has a
new addition to the political
scene. Darby Miller,
daughter of Susan Miller,
Rep. Sander Levin's district
administrator, is working as
administrative officer in
Washington, D.C., for the
newly formed National Jew-
ish Democratic Council.
She started as a volunteer,
and "made herself indispen-
sable," her mother and col-
leagues agreed, landing a job
eight months ago, fresh out
of the University of Mich-
igan.
The National Jewish
Democratic Council, just
over a year old, is a grass-
roots group that aims to lure
Jewish Democrats into all
levels of government. The
council is the Democratic
Party's answer to the more
established National Jewish
Coalition of the Republican
Party.
The group is launching
chapters in many states.
Though nothing is in place
in Michigan, council
employees are looking to
form a chapter here.
Where, Oh, Where,
Was Sen. Levin?
Sen. Carl Levin was
noticeably absent from the
first meeting of a newly
formed bipartisan pro-Israel
Senate caucus. But it wasn't
his fault. He wasn't invited.
For the past year, Sens.
Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and
Richard Shelby, D-Ala.,
Carl Levin
have been working out
details for the Senate
Caucus on United
States/Israel Security Coop-
eration.
The duo didn't want too
many senators on hand for
their March 23 meeting, so
they picked 10 senators —
five from each party. Of
course, caucus staffer Chuck
Brooks said, Mr. Levin will
be invited to the next
meeting.
"There are so many good
pro-Israel senators," Mr.
Brooks said. "Many are al-
ready doing the work. Mr.
When did Jews in
Michigan enter the
Republican Party?
Let us know what
you think.
Levin's name did come up at
the first meeting."
Some of the senators in-
vited seemed like odd
choices to the pro-Israel
community. But, Mr. Brooks
said, the caucus was looking
for some new blood.
Guests were Joseph Biden,
D-Del., Hank Brown, R-
Colo., Dan Coats, R-Ind,
Thad Cochran, R-Miss.,
Christopher Dodd, D-Conn.,
Albert Gore Jr., D-Tenn.,
Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, J.
Bennett Johnson, D-La.,
John McCain, R-Ariz., and
Ted Stevens, R-Alaska.
Mr. Levin was not
available,for comment, .but
press secretary Willie
Blacklow said the senator
would be interested in
anything that furthers the
strategic ties between the
two nations.
"The new caucus is going
to institutionalize
U.S.-Israeli strategic coop-
eration and serve as a forum
that can readily provide in-
formation to both the ex-
ecutive and legislative bran-
ches about U.S.-Israel rela-
tions," Mr. Specter said.
