BACKGROUND: Barbara
Nusbaum grew up in the
Dexter neighborhood of
Detroit. Her parents were
Mary and Donald Samuels.
She lived upstairs from her
grandparents, and she has
fond childhood memories.
"It was a beautiful place to
curl up into."
She went to Congregation
Shaarey Zedek and felt a
closeness with the Jewish
community. "Everything
was like extended family."
After her marriage and
raising a family, she
believes that volunteer work
was a natural progression.
While her children were in
school, she was involved
with the PTO at Hillel Day
School. She was always in-
terested in social work and
became involved with
JARC, since she had a
cousin in the program. "I've
always been a one-to-one
person." In addition to the
thousands of volunteer
hours and strong commit-
ment for the organization,
there is a residential home
in memory of her parents.
She is truly proud of the suc-
cess of JARC.
She is grateful to Rabbi
Freedman for introducing
her to the late Bina Avtzon
who involved her with the
new Jewish Americans from
the Soviet Union and the
resettlement program. "It's
a tremendous upheaval, and
now I can relate to how
frightening it is when you
cannot speak the language?'
Mrs. Nusbaum first
became involved by helping
the new arrivals find jobs,
homes, furniture and
clothing. She feels the best
thing she can offer these
new Americans is her per-
sonal help, like driving
them to Sinai Hospital.
"I've never stopped picking
them up from Sinai." Mrs.
Nusbaum has made many
friends through her
volunteer work. ❑
