Mr. Himmelman defies a
lot of definitions. His lyrics
often frame an issue in
terms of questions and
demands, not easy solutions.
Plus, the pace and style of
his songs say little about
their content: "Love of Mid-
night," which describes an
apocalyptic moment when
"justice and mercy have fus-
ed into one," is a hard-
driving song with an often
lumbering beat. Not exactly
"The Times They Are
A'Changin' ."
On stage, Peter Him-
melman does what few
musicians do: perform. At
Pontiac's Industry, he began
his concert with a vow "to
play our tucheses off," despite
a meager turnout. He fre-
quently involved the au-
dience in his performance,
asking them at one point to
make requests. He asked
another audience member to
switch leather jackets with
him for the duration of the
concert, mainly because he
liked it more than his own.
And he sang an improvised
song about a man in the au-
dience with a goatee — with
a country and western twist.
Now living in Los Angeles,
Peter Himmelman has set-
tled into success somewhat
self-consciously. Like his
music, he has remained true
to certain values — Judaism
chief among them. But he
does not condemn the ex-
cesses of some of his col-
leagues and heroes, like
Jimi Hendrix and Bob
Marley.
"Their message is
somewhat vague, but no less
spiritual and meaningful,"
he said. "The problem was
that they were on a collision
course with themselves."
Musicians, he said, need
training both in music and
in mastering their in-
dividual muse. "Hendrix
didn't know how to apply his
emotions," he said.
