37-year-old policeman who
came from Ethiopia.
He completed the course in
2 hours, 14 minutes and 56
seconds, shaving 5 minutes
off the previous best time.
Ethiopians came in second
and third, followed by five of
the 20 foreign entrants. Of
the 150 Israelis competing in
the main event, the best a
sabra could do was eighth
place.
But an Israeli came in first
in the less grueling 13-mile
mini-marathon, in which
1,500 runners took part. The
winner was Dov Kremer, a
26-year-old economics
graduate from Holon.

Tel Aviv (JTA) Ethiopi-
an immigrants took first, se-
cond and third places in the
12th annual Tel Aviv
Marathon run.
As usual, the 26-mile race,
organized by Histadrut's
Hapoel Sports Club, snarled
traffic in Israel's largest
city.
The main streets in central
and northern Tel Aviv and
in the Ramat Gan suburb
were closed to vehicles, forc-
ing motorists and bus pas-
sengers to endure delays of
up to six hours.
The winner of the event,
which has become a classic
in major cities all over the
world, was Tumme Turbe, a
