Bloomfield Atlantis' head
coach who took the Michigan
team to Milwaukee, says
young Farber "has the uncan-
ny ability to race anybody
next to him. He loves to race.
Maybe he doesn't feel the
pressure, but he gets out
there and swims his heart
out.
"You might see a thousand
kids before you see the one
like Adam."
When Adam hits the water,
he loves to "fly." Take that
medley relay race in Livonia's
ABC Clarenceville Festival
swim meet in mid-March. By
the time Adam hit the water
for the third leg of the 8-and-
under event, his father recall-
ed, Adam's Birmingham-
Bloomfield Atlantis (BBA)
Swim Club squad was about
half the pool behind.
But in a flash, Farber had
churned out a 15.2-second
butterfly split and had caught
the first-place swimmer. BBA
ended up second by a
half-second.
That weekend, Farber won
four individual events (the fly,
back, breast and freestyle, all
at 25 yards) and was on the
winning 100-yard free relay
team. He also beat his own
BBA record in the fly by
almost one second.
In the Schroeder Classic A-
Plus in Milwaukee, featuring
top swimmers from 10 states,
Adam won five 8-and-under

individual championships
and took second in the
10-and-under 100-freestyle.
He won the freestyle, back
and breast stroke and the fly,
all at 50 yards, and the
100-yard individual medley.
On the flight home, as
Adam sat gazing at his high-
point trophy, the pilot came
on the public address system
and introduced the youngster
and his accomplishments.
The other passengers gave
Adam a round of applause.
In the United States Swim-
ming-Michigan (USS-M) state
meet in Warren March 7-8,
Adam was not as dominating.
But he was competing in the
10-and-under division and
still finished ninth overall in
the 200 free (2:27.74) and
10th in the 100 butterfly
(1:18.09).
The coaches' appraisals of
Adam are echoed by one of
Farber's teachers at Hillel
Day School, where both he
and sister (and fellow com-
petitive swimmer) Cheri, 11,
are honor students.

"He's a very good student
and he's easy to teach," says
Adina Tzeel, Adam's Hebrew
teacher. "When he has work
to do, he wants to do it as fast
as possible. He wants to be
the first to bring up the work
to the desk. Adam likes to be
No. 1," says Mrs. Tzeel with a
laugh.

Nevertheless, says his
mother, Nancy, "He's still a
normal kid."
For instance, she catches
him sometimes doing his
homework at the breakfast
table in the morning when
he's forgotten to do it after
school the previous day.
