extends beyond' the
classroom.
"Once they realize what
their goals are going to be,
they will feel foolish for ex-
pecting success from the few
hours their children actually
spend in a classroom," Mr.
Spack said. "Treat the
school as an isolated appen-
dage and you are almost
doomed to failure."
In addition, Mr. Spack
favors a "core" Jewish edu-
cation that would comprise a
general understanding of
Jewish- history and ethics,
with an emphasis on the
Torah. He does not, however,
favor a tightly defined cur-
riculum. That, he believes, is
best left to the school to
decide.
Yet without a clearly
enunciated set of goals and
standards, religious schools
will not see much grant
money for programming.
Locally, the Jewish Federa-
tion has said that its new re-
lationship with schools will
be supportive, which would
include helping schools
write and receive grant pro-
posals. That does not mean,
however, that Federation is
going to get involved in what
those goals should be.
"To set a standard would
be an example of Federation
chutzpah," said Dr. Conrad
Giles, who chaired the com-
mittee that wrote the Fed-
eration's education report.
"The problem is that it re-
quires more money and
prioritizing. That's going to
be hard."
What further complicates
the matter is not so much the
issue of standards, but who
is doing the evaluating.
"You can't have a
checklist," said one school
principal. "There are good
schools out there, but you
can't just copy them. You
have to meet the needs of
your students, your parents
and your teachers." ❑
