Mr. Brown's announced
choice as a running mate —
did not play a significant
role in Connecticut, where
the former California gover-
nor split the Jewish vote
with Gov. Clinton, according
to exit poll data.
Some analysts suggest
that Mr. Brown could con-
tinue to do well with Jewish
voters in New York — an
apparent contradiction that
may be explained by the
angry, frustrated mood of
the electorate.
Jewish voters may simply
be lashing out at what they
see as a poor set of choices —
the dominant political re-
sponse of 1992. But if Mr.
Brown does wrest the nomi-
nation from Mr. Clinton —
something few regard as
likely — the Jackson factor
could become a dominant
one in the Jewish commun-
ity.
And that could produce a
grudging turn to the Repub-
licans for many Jews — or,
more likely, a low Jewish
turnout in November that
could seriously undercut
Jewish political clout.
A Brown victory in New
York could also force
Democrats to turn to a new
candidate — an outcome
that would not displease a
number of Jewish politicos.
"If Brown does very well in
New York, it could derail
Clinton," said Allan
Lichtman, a political
historian at American Uni-
versity who has developed a
sophisticated system for
predicting presidential elec-
tions. "We may then see a
deadlocked convention;
without an outright
majority, anything is possi-
ble at the convention. We
haven't seen more than one
ballot in 40 years."
Some Jewish political
leaders are quietly talking
about just that kind of
scenario. "In some cases,
people in this community
would like to see the process
opened up," said Nathan
Landow, Maryland's Dem-
ocratic party chairman.
"Maybe there are a lot of
people saying 'none of the
above,' who are hoping that
some other candidate will
emerge at that time. It's a
long shot; the rules of the
party make it difficult to
happen, and that may not be
in our best interests."
Mr. Landow mentioned a
handful of alternate choices,
including Sen. Al Gore,. Rep.
Dick Gephardt, Sen. Lloyd
Bensten, Sen. Jay
Rockefeller, Sen. Bill
Bradley and the ever present
Gov. Mario Cuomo.
