IDF Worries
About Suicides
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Israel Defense Force is seri-
ously concerned about the
suicide rate among soldiers.
Seven have taken their
lives since Jan. 1, bringing
to 37 the total suicides in the
armed forces during the cur-
rent statistical year, which
ends on March 31.
Maj. Gen. Ran Goren, head
of the IDF's Manpower
Branch at General • Head-
quarters, testified on the
subject before a joint
Knesset committee. Com-
mittee Chairman Haggai
Merom agreed it was cause
for great concern.
Another committee mem-
ber, Michael Bar-Zohar,
observed that the number of
suicides in the 14 to 21 age
group in Israel corresponds
to that in Western countries,
and he doubted it could be
reduced.
Maj. Gen. Goren said each
case of suicide in the IDF is
investigated. It turns out
that most stem from family
or personal problems and
very few are service-related,
such as an inability to adjust
to army life, he said.
In fact, only two soldiers
who killed . themselves in-
dicated they were abused or
harassed while in military
service.
Maj. Gen. Goren pointed to
another statistic. The
suicide rate in combat units
has fallen in recent years,
while the number in the rear
echelons has increased.

Prague (JTA) — The Jew-
ish religious community in
Prague announced it will
seek damages from the
parents of five adolescents
who knocked down or other-
wise damaged scores of
tombstones March 19 in the
Jewish cemetery in the cen-
tral Bohemian town of
Pribram.
Although the offenders,
ages 13 to 15, have been
identified, they will not be
charged in court because of
their youth. Police consider
the incident an act of juve-
nile delinquency.
One of the vandals, a 13-
year-old girl, was caught by
a passerby who informed the
police. The other four fled
but were identified the same
day.
None of them could ex-
plain what prompted their
act save that the idea of
demolishing tombstones oc-
curred after they entered the
graveyard.
