"With this pamphlet in

you will bring about a four-
thousand-year delayed

reads.
In a previous letter, Mrs.
Mokry said that "the Jewish

unknown, brutal inhuman
tortures either to force us

to incapacitate, maim and

Europeans Thought
Indians Were Jews

Tribes. of Israel. This belief
was supported by the
discovery of a "Jewish" tomb
in Ohio. Various Hebrew in-
scriptions were discovered in
the Americas that supposed-
ly preceded Columbus'
discovery in 1492. Plus, the
aboriginal Americans practic-
ed circumcision and spoke in
a language similar to Hebrew.
Why were the Europeans
looking for the Ten Lost
Tribes of Israel? That was
what Professor Richard H.
Popkin of UCLA sought to
answer Sunday evening,
March 30, at the Rackham
Auditorium in Ann Arbor.
During his lecture, Pro-
fessor Popkin said the Euro-
peans were searching for the
lost tribes of Israel to
facilitate the Second Coming
of Christ. They felt that the

Corrections

Last week, in an article
about an incident at
Hillel Day School, The
Jewish News reported
that a former Hillel stu-
dent had sprayed a
chemical irritant into a
closed gym. According to
a Farmington Hills police
report, a Hillel student
had sprayed the device.
Also, in last week's arti-
cle on the April 4 BBYO
reunion, dinner chairman
Allan Feuer's name was
misspelled.
The names of William
and Elaine Kadashaw,
and Nathan and Edith
Butrimovitz, were placed

prophecies of the Book of
Revelations were coming true
with the increased conversion
of Jews to Christianity. The
last piece to hasten Christ's
arrival needed to be the
discovery and subsequent
conversion of the lost tribes of
Israel. Columbus believed
that the lost tribes were in In-
dia; finding them was one of
the goals of his voyage.
Because of such ideas, Pro-
fessor Popkin said, "Chris-
tians were prepared to accept
what was found in America
as going along with their
spiritual views!'
Many Jews also concurred
with the view that the Native
Americans were Jewish
descendants. Most prominent
among them perhaps was
Menasseh ben Israel, who felt
that, "the 10 lost tribes were
dispersed following the Tower
of Babel!'
"One Jewish American col-
onist went so far as to grant
the Native Americans dis-
counts on goods because he
considered them 'brethren!"
said Professor Popkin. ❑
