Harry Orlinsky,
HUC Professor
Dr. Harry Orlinsky, pro-
fessor emeritus of Bible at
Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion,
died March 21. He was 84.
Dr. Orlinsky was born in
Ontario, Canada, and served
from 1935-36 as a fellow at
the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem. In 1943, Rabbi
Stephen S. Wise invited him
to join the faculty of the Jew-
ish Institute of Religion.
At the request of the
Israeli government, Dr.
Orlinsky in 1954 was an
authenticator of the Dead
Sea Scrolls. He also was the
author of such works as A
History of Biblical Transla-
tion and the North American
Contribution and translator
of a five-volume English edi-
tion of Rashi's commentary
on the Pentateuch.
Editor of the Jewish
Publication Society of
America's New Translation
of the Torah and Masoretic
Studies, Dr. Orlinsky served
as president of the American
Friends of the Israeli Ex-
ploration Society and was a
fellow of Princeton. Univer-
sity's Coucil of the Human-
ities and of the American
Academy for Jewish Resear-
ch.
He is survived by his wife,
Donya, of Baltimore; sons,
Walter of Baltimore, S. Zeke
of Columbia; three grand-
children.

R Schoenfield,
`Swimming' Founder

Faye Schoenfield, former
Detroiter of Los Osos, Calif.,
died March 12. She was 66.
Mrs. Schoenfield was the
former business manager and
co-founder of Swimming
World (Junior Swimmer), the
leading competitive swimm-
ing, diving and water polo
magazine.
She was the tour organizer
for swimming enthusiasts to
the 1964, 1968, 1972 and
1976 Olympic Games, as well
as the organizer and leader
for the World Swimming
Championships in Belgrade
in 1973, Cali, Columbia in
1975, Berlin in 1978 and
Guayaquil in 1982.
In 1973, when the United
States opened relations with
the People's Republic of
China, Mrs. Schoenfield was
manager of a U.S. State De-
partment-sponsored team of
swimmers and divers that
gave clinics and exhibitions
in Guangzhou, Changsha,
Shanghai and Beijing.
She is survived by her hus-
band, Albert; daughters, Nan-
cy Bender and Diane Rizzo;
three grandchildren.

Flora Kovan,
Children's Activist

Flora Kerner Kovan, of
Southfield, died March 27.
She was a member of Tem-
ple Beth El, the National
Council of Jewish Women,
ORT and Maimonides. She
was the past owner and
founder of Imperial Pearl
Distributors and a leading
fund-raiser for Children's
Hospital of Detroit. She was
a past board member of the

A. Hammerman,
Founded Paper

Dayton (JTA) — Anne
Mintz Hammerman, former
editor and publisher of the
Dayton Jewish Chronicle,
died March 20. She was 75.
Ms. Hammerman was one
of the founders in 1962 of the
Dayton Jewish Chronicle.
She remained its editor and
co-publisher until 1983,
when she sold the paper.
She was also vice president
and treasurer of the Ameri-
can Jewish Press Associ-
ation and was the recipient
of several awards.
In addition to her jour-
nalistic achievements, Ms.
Hammerman was a member
of Hadassah.
