Print-O-Mania — First it was
primitive, then it was ethnic and now
various prints merge to create a key
item for this season. Whether it's a
printed T-shirt, necktie or walk short,
prints are multiple, dimensional and
colorful.
The 90s Pant — Not to be confused
with a new technique for breathing,
this applies to a variety of new
silhouettes in two-legged garments
variously referred to as pants,
trousers and slacks. Past decades
have focused on such innovations as
expandable waistbands, plain fronts
and bell bottoms. The new pant
treatments include crease-less legs,
fuller leg silhouettes, higher waist-
bands and the paper bag waist.
Expect to find this look especially in
the younger market.
Affordable Fashion — Manufac-
turers and designers have read the
reports and set out to offer second
lines with suffixes like Roman numeral
11's and designations like "Studio
Collection." This is to address budget
considerations without sacrificing a
desired look. One approach is to
provide functional details — double
stitching on T-shirts so they can be
worn as an undershirt or outershirt,
for example. By using blended fabrics
in suits, sport coats and slacks, prices
can be held to a lower amount.
Denim Updates — Probably the
only fabric which is a fashion story in
its own right, this universal favorite
has been "rediscovered" by
designers and is working its way into
total wardrobe dressing. Denim
jackets, shirts, pants and shorts are
given many different applications.
The 1992 jeanswear sensation is
making money for everyone. Levi's,
Lee, Wrangler, The Gap and Guess are
all putting up huge numbers, as are
the top-flight name designers, who
are capitalizing on the boom with
their own high-fashion, often high-
priced, items in denim.
Color and "soft hand" are very
important trends this spring. Garment
dyeing, yarn dyeing and overdyeing
continue to add excitement to the
color offering in denim. Overdyed
products, such as black over indigo,
blue over indigo, and fashion colors
over indigo, are in strong demand.
