LOOKING GOOD EVEN WHEN
the economy looks bad translates
into more affordable, casual and
comfortable fashions for men for
spring/summer '92, reports the Men's
Fashion Association (MFA), a New
York-based trade group.
MFA predicts the following trends:
Black and White — 1991 saw a
strong influence by artists such as
Mondrian in bold, often blocked,
colors. Inspired by European
collections and perhap the "cinema
verite" black-and-white graphics
catching on in television and
magazines, this spring there are even
more graphics, especially Op Art.
Barcelona Brights — The quad-
rennial worldwide sports competition
has frequently resulted in the spot-
light on new personalities and fashion
trends — i.e. Mark Spitz winning gold
medals in his bikini briefs, Jean-
Claude Killy establishing new apparel
for skiing. The five-ring symbol of the
Games this year brings back into the
fashion picture primary brights.
Expect to see the bright colors

performance apparel.
Soft Washes — The "lived-in" look
is a softer, more muted presentation
of colors. It's been established for a
long time in jeans, but now it surfaces
in cotton, linen, silk, blends, and even
"washed" wool for suit collections.
Conversationals — T-shirts with
slogans or pictures printed on them
have long been a way to start a
conversation. Spring '92 sees
conversational patterns and prints in
ties, .shirts: robes, pajamas, sweaters
and sport shirts as well as hosiery.
The picture-like motifs range from the
serious (environmental and historic)
to the whimsical (the Wild West and
Las Vegas gambling).
New Blues — After World War II,
true blue, befitting the returning
troops, was a popular color. It might
be keyed into the victory over Iraq
and the national mood following that
campaign, but blues are "in" this
season. There is a difference,
however. It is not all navy blue nor
pale blue. Blue takes on many
shadings including cobalt, indigo, sky,
azure and Mediterranean.
