horseshoes, shuffleboard, volleyball,
table tennis, water volleyball and bas-
ketball are available. A full children's
program is offered during summer and
holidays.
Colorado is probably the state most
people think of as dude ranch territo-
ry. Two of the better known ranches are
the C Lazy U Ranch and Colorado
Trails Ranch.
C Lazy U Ranch (303-887-3344) in
Granby, 95 miles west of Denver, is a
summer vacation ranch with a full rid-
ing program, in addition to a range of
other activities. There is an extensive
children's and teens' program for
youngsters ages 3 to 17. Rocky
Mountain National Park is nearby.
At Colorado Trails Ranch (303-247-
5055) in Durango, comprehensive
horseback riding instruction at all lev-
els is offered, along with archery, ri-
flery, swimming, tennis, fishing and
evening programs.
Wyoming is also dude ranch coun-
try. At the R Lazy S (307-733-2655), 13
miles northwest of Jackson, log cabins
accommodate up to 45 guests. There
is a full riding program, and the near-
by Snake River and Teton Mountain
trails offer many other alternatives.
In addition to the R Lazy S Ranch,
the Jackson area boasts the Heart 6
Ranch (307-543-2477), open from June
through early November (with some
snowmobiling available in the winter).
Horseback riding, fishing, wilderness
trips and rodeo nights are just some of
the activities. Children's programs are
available.
Most people think of dude ranching
as strictly a Western endeavor, but
that's not true. You can participate in
a ranching vacation closer to home —
in New York State, in fact. For more in-
formation, call the following New York-
based ranches:
Ridin-Hy Ranch Resort ( 518-494-
2742) in Warrensburg; Pinegrove
Resort Ranch (800-346-4626) in Ker-
honkson; Rocking Horse Ranch (800-
647-2624) in Highland; Roseland
Ranch (914-868-1350) in Stanfordville;
and Roaring Brook Ranch and Tennis
Resort (518-668-5767) in Lake George.
All offer horseback riding as well as a
number of other activities, and most
are open year-round for winter sports
as well. ❑
