She became the first chairman of the Meals on Wheels program, now celebrating its 19th year. She and several other volunteers then became involved with a directory to help the handicapped in public buildings. After three years and 300 volunteers surveying the sites, the NCJW produced the Metro Detroit Access Guide, now with a revised edition. In 1984, NCJW honored her with the Hannah G. Solo- mon Award for leadership and service. Another rewarding accom- plishment for Mrs. Kaufman is her participation in the first adult bat mitzvah at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in 1984. "The women's movement had a tremendous effect on me, and I was determined to define my place as a Jewish woman."
