She also began working
with NCJW at the north-
west branch. She became
the first chairman of the
Meals on Wheels program,
now celebrating its 19th
year. She and several other
volunteers then became
involved with a directory to
help the handicapped in
public buildings. After three
years and 300 volunteers
surveying the sites, the
NCJW produced the Metro
Detroit Access Guide, now
with a revised edition. In
1984, NCJW honored her
with the Hannah G. Solo-
mon Award for leadership
and service.
Another rewarding accom-
plishment for Mrs. Kaufman
is her participation in the
first adult bat mitzvah at
Congregation Shaarey
Zedek in 1984. "The
women's movement had a
tremendous effect on me,
and I was determined to
define my place as a Jewish
woman."
Like many community
volunteers, Mrs. Kaufman
attributes her awards and
accomplishments to team
effort. About the Heart of
Gold award: "If I won this
award, it is the volunteers
that have enhanced me. You
can't do a job like this by
yourself." ❑

Sheik Met
About MIA
Paris (JTA) — Sheik Abbas
Mussawi, the Hezbollah
leader gunned down by
Israeli attack helicopters in
southern Lebanon on Feb.
16, met in Paris with Israel's
chief hostage negotiator
about a month before his
death, a well-informed Fren-
ch publication has reported.
According to Le Nouvel
Observateur, Mr. Mussawi
came to Paris in January to
meet with Mr. Lubrani.
It was not their first en-
counter, the left-wing week-
ly said. It said the Shi'ite
leader brought with him
photographs of Israeli air
force navigator Ron Arad,
whose Phantom jet was shot
down near Saida, Lebanon.
Mr. Arad, believed
prisoner of Hezbollah or an-
other Islamic fundamenta-
list group, is the only one of
seven Israel Defense Force
personnel missing in Leb-
anon.
