BACKGROUND:
Kaufman grew up in the
small town of New Kensing-
town, Pa., where everything
was within walking dis-
tance. Her parents were
William and Rose Leibovitz.
She describes small-town
living as "all family — all

mishpachah."
"I received my Jewish
background from my home,"
said Mrs. Kaufman. Her
parents were active in the
community. When she was
13, the family moved to the
nearby town of Mt. Pleas-
ant. During her teen years
she was a drum majorette at
Ramsay High School.
After high school, she
went to Pennsylvania State LT(
University. She studied
journalism and wrote for
her college and hometown
newspapers. After gradua-
tion, she worked at the
Pittsburgh Press.
She met her husband
through a Detroit friend,
and they married in 1949.
While raising her children,
she became involved in
community volunteer work
with encouragement from
her friend, Mildred Berry
Court. She helped organize
the Sinai Hospital library
and kept her writing skills
sharp by editing The Torch,
Sigma Delta Tau national
sorority bi-annual maga-
zine, and the Bulletin of the
National Council of Jewish
