said. "I had a traditional re-
ligious upbringing, but this
was an opportunity for me to
learn leadership skills. I de-
veloped and changed a lot
because when I joined I was
withdrawn and reserved. I
was the council president
when I graduated."
Now, she works in cor-
porate planning, research
and development for an area
financial institution, and
she's studying for her MBA
at night.
Annette Meskin of West
Bloomfield was president of
the Greater Detroit Council
from 1958-59. She was a
charter member of Glazer
BBG. Like many teen-agers
who become involved in
BBYO, Mrs. Meskin de-
veloped an activity level
that became an all-
encompassing part of her life.
"You can say it time and
time again, but for many of
us, BBYO brought us out of
our shells and taught us how
to be leaders," she said. "It
absolutely taught me how to
be an effective leader."

"I love BBYO," said Mr.
Kessler, reunion co-chair.
"It gave me my world, and
I'm dying to give something
back to the group."
Mr. Kessler, who is also on
the BBYO board of directors
and an AZA life member,
came to AZA as a way to
meet other Jewish kids his
age when his family moved
here from Houston.
For chimer chairman Alan
Feuer, organizing the reu-
nion has its own sweet
ironies. Mr. Feuer called it
interesting that he is using
many of the skills he learned
as a teen-ager to put
together an event for BBYO.
"Listen, this is a labor of
love for me," he said. "For
many of us, BBYO was a
driving force in our Jewish
lives." ❑

On April 4, Mr. Weiner no
doubt will hear more of these
success stories and love
stories, the kind there are no
shortage of within BBYO.
That's when the council will
hold its first-ever reunion,
beginning at 9 p.m. at Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek.
The event, costing $39 a per-
son, still has reservations
available to those who wish
to call the BBYO office.
Lisa Goren and Marc
Goldberg, both 17, are living
the memories the alumni
talk about. Lisa, in her four-
th year of membership with
Shira BBG, said BBYO is a
connection for Jewish youth
to meet other Jewish youth.
She also said it's "cool" for
Jewish kids to join an organ-
ization such as BBYO be-
cause of what she sees as a
resurgence during the past
10 years of teen-agers and
young adults seeking to
identify Jewishly with other
Jews their age.
"Also, you learn here," she
said. "I've learned to speak
in front of other people, and
I've learned things I can use
in the real world. BBG is a
big part of my life. It's some-
thing that has opened real
doors for me."
Marc Goldberg, a charter
member of Levi Strauss
AZA, said he initially kept
coming back because of the
people he met and the good
times he was having.
"I learned a lot of organ-
izational skills, people skills,
and a lot of intangibles, like
how to express myself," said
Mark, the regional AZA
president.
It was the same sort of
leadership training that at-
tracted Michele Unger
Siegal of Farmington Hills,
an Ahava BBG member
from 1977 to 1981.
"In ninth grade it was the
thing everybody did," she
