Temple Israel's

solution, Yes, we are a people,
a religion, a culture, an ethnic
group. But those who say we
are a religion, and stop there,
have missed some of the most
distinctive elements in our
group life. Those who say we
are a people, and end the
definition, have lifted one
characteristic of the pattern
and have substituted it for
the whole. Jewish identity is
often experienced on several
dimensions simultaneously.

Nor does this perspective
apply any less to our personal
lives. Alexander the Great
asked the sages of Israel an
existential question: "What
should a man do to live?"
Quick and sure was their rep-
ly. "He should be prepared to
give up his life."
The way to true happiness
is by forgetfulness of self. You
can find yourself by losing
yourself. Constant concentra-
tion upon self stands between
each of us and true satisfac-
tion in life. The greatest
figure in our history was
Moses, whose true greatness
came from his profound
humility.
Out of the ancient past, a
strange ritual speaks to us,
"Guard yourselves against
simplistic solutions. Recog-
nize that there is more than
one dimension to human ex-
perience. And that what
seems paradoxical may
describe reality, even though
it defies logic."
