Neo-Nazi Rally
Turns Violent
Bonn (JTA) — At least 15
persons were injured and 70
demonstrators were arrested
last week in the southeast
German town of Passau
when an attempt to break up
a neo-Nazi meeting turned
into a riot.
The clashes occurred when
members of the German
People's Union, led by vet-
eran activist Gerhard Frey,
left the heavily guarded
public hall where they had
gathered to face some 3,000
protesters, who had come
from all over Germany.
Hundreds of police on hand
to intervene were unable to
prevent shops from being
demolished and vehicles
overturned as the rival
groups fought in this eastern
German town on the border
with Austria.
The protesters incurred
the wrath of local citizens,
who blamed them for the
damage, estimated in the
millions of marks, and
demanded they leave town.
The Passau authorities
had earlier rejected efforts
by the anti-Nazis to have the
meeting banned. They
argued that a ban could eas-
ily be reversed by the courts
and that the neo-Nazis
would hold their meeting
somewhere else if they were
denied use of the hall.
Mr. Frey used the occasion
to denounce the protesters as
traitors. He vowed his party
would struggle to prevent a
sellout of German interests.
Mr. Frey, publisher of the
Munich-based neo-Nazi
weekly National Zeitung,
promised his followers
success in the next
parliamentary elections,
scheduled for October 1994.
Army Eases
Firearm Rules
Jerusalem (JTA) — In the
wake of fatal attacks by
Arab gunmen on Jewish set-
tlers, the Israel Defense
Force has eased the rules
governing when and how
soldiers may use firearms
against Arab suspects in the
administered territories.
Although the IDF offered
no details, security sources
confirmed this week that the
troops have been given much
wider leeway.
Until now, the rules per-
mitted soldiers to open fire
only if their lives were
threatened, if suspects did
not respond to orders to halt,
or in encounters with mask-
ed individuals.
