Shcharansky Walks
Bridge Of Freedom

Will Anatoly's release signal
an opening of the gates for
Soviet Jewry?

As Anatoly Shcharansky walked
across the snow-covered Glienicke
Bridge between the two Germanys on
Tuesday at 10:57 a.m. Berlin time, the
man who has become a conscience of
the world was free for the first time in
nine years.
This 38-year-old Russian with a
winning smile and the courage to
match it waved to a crowd of about 100
bystanders on the western side of the
bridge, then roared past a crowd of
journalists in the Mercedes-Benz of
Richard Burt, the U.S. Ambassador to
West Germany.
On the bridge, Shcharansky,
wearing a silver fur hat, had engaged
Burt in animated conversation.
Eyewitnesses reported that
Shcharansky appeared to be in good
physical shape. He had reportedly

been in poor health during his nine
years in Soviet prisons and labor

Samuil Valk's dark beard, Rus-
sian accent, and satirical humor re-
minded more than one United
Synagogue Youth (USY) member of
actor Robin Williams in his movie
Moscow on the Hudson.
Valk, 32, a Russian immigrant
living in Southfield, laughed at the
comparison. "Moscow on the Hicd-
son," he exclaimed Sunday, as he
remembered his first trip to an
American supermarket, "that's
exactly how it was. You should have
seen the garbage we bought!"
When one teen at Cong. Shaarey

responded: "Whatever you see in the
movies is true ... the film White
