_ An Expose The Big Lie By HARRY HURWITZ Minister of Information, Embassy of Israel Washington, D.C. Jewish Unity Reaffirmed, Dissidents Exposed in Their Many Garbs In World War II, Goebbels, the notorious head of Hitler's prop- aganda machine, developed and exploited the "Big Lie" technique in his psychological war against the Allies. The formula was relatively simple: the more preposterous his story, the better; the more exagger- ated his claim, the more acceptable; the more grotesque the details, the more effective; the more often the "Big Lie" was repeated, the more likely were the gullible masses to swallow it. Thus, the Jews were destroying the world! Churchill was a mass murderer! Roosevelt "the Jew" (!) was responsible for the war, etc., etc.!! iffasiamaiiiimarawarmwewairatiatiret Goebbels could do it. He was the propaganda minister of the most oppressive totalitarian regime in history. He had complete control of the press and radio. Germany and some of the countries under its jackboot had no free press. They simply carried out the orders of the Nazis — to publish the "Big Lie" and give it currency by repeating it day after day, hour after hour with ever more shrieking headlines. Now, more than 40 years later, the same technique is being employed (Continued on Page 5) THE JEWISH NEWS A Weekly Review Commentary, Page 2 of Jewish Events An End to Indifference: Barbara Tuchman and Rita Hauser Taking the Lead in Israel's Behalf Editorial, Page 4 Copyright © The Jewish Jews Publishing Co. Wexler President JACQUELINE WEXLER DR. DAVID HYATT NEW YORK — Jacqueline Grennan Wexler, former president of Hunter College in New York City, has been elected president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. The election followed a nationwide search begun after Dr. David Hyatt had announced his decision to retire from the presidency, effective Oct. 1, for personal and family reasons. Mrs. Wexler has been a member of the executive board and has served as vice chairman and secretary of NCCJ since 1980. During the past year, she conducted a study of the mission, the administration, and the governance structures of NCCJ and presented the results of that study at the NCCJ annual meeting in March. This feeling is gaining expression in private conversations — which are occasionally reflected in press reports. The issue was raised obliquely at Sunday's Cabinet meeting when ministers pressed Defense Minister Ariel Sharon with detailed questions about the IDF's advance earlier that day to take Beirut International Airport. Sharon maintained the advance was "tactical" and did not require a formal Cabinet decision. He apparently argued the advance was covered by the longstanding decision-in-principle that Israel will not agree to a one-sided ceasefire and that Israel's responses to PLO violations would not necessarily be directly related in scope or area to the precise The ministen: were apparently unaware at the time of Sunday's meeting of the massive extent of IDF bombing and shelling of west Beirut on. Sunday. Their subsequent awareness ---- and the unprecedently strong world media castigation of Israel over that bombardment — has left several ministers preparing questions for Sharon to be asked at the next Cabinet meeting. That meeting was expected to be yesterday or today following Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir's return from Washington. Reports in the Israeli press from Washington on Wednesday had Reagan warning Shamir that bilateral U.S.-Israel relations would suffer if Israel launches an all-out assault on west Beirut. It is believed sanctions are being considered by the U.S. The uneasy Cabinet ministers also want fuller information — and indeed a voice in prior decision making — over what top military commentator Zev Schiff in Haaretz called the IDF's ongoing "salami" tactics in Beirut. Levin Urges 'Americans' to Speak on Behalf of Israel By ALAN HITSKY Sen. Carl Levin opened Sunday's Solidarity With Israel Rally in Oak Park with the familiar salutation, "My fellow Americans." The fact that the more than 1,000 members of the Detroit Jewish community who attended the rally in Shepherd Park have the same right to speak out as all Americans, and that Israel's operations in Lebanon against the PLO terrorists are in America's interest, were the major themes of Sen. Levin's 25- minute speech. "James Watt to the contrary," Levin said, "this is a community which is a vital part of this country. We have bled for this nation, died to preserve its freedom, and we intend to contribute to its future." The 40-minute rally drew an appreciative, sign-waving crowd who came to demon- strate their support for Israel. Levin was emphatic in listing the many reasons why Israel's Operation Peace for Galilee was in the best interests of the U.S. "It is not in America's interest to have Soviet surrogates assume power in the Middle East," he said. "It is not in America's interest to have powerful forces in the Middle East whose stated goal is the destruction of Israel and whose basic policy is to thwart any attempt to reach a peaceful negotiated resolution of the issues in the area. "But the PLO is committed to Israel's destruction and is committed to sabotage the (Continued on Page 6) (Continued on Page 12) Tauber Leads 1983 Campaign, Robinson to Be Chairman-Elect The appointment of Joel D. Tauber as general chairman and Jack A. Robinson as chairman-elect of the 1983 Allied Jewish Campaign and Israel Emergency Fund has been announced by Avern Cohn, president of the Jewish Welfare Federation. The announcement was made as the Detroit Jewish community prepares for the special Israel Emergency Fund appeal that, accompanied by the 1983 regular Campaign, will help the people of Israel to meet ongoing human needs in this time of crisis. Tauber served as 1982 Campaign chairman and Robinson was co-chairman. Jay M. Kogan, who last year served with Tauber as general chairman, will now head the Council of Cam- paign Chairmen, past leaders who continue in key assignments in the Campaign.
