$2,048,000 in Gifts Set All-Time Record For Opener of Allied Jewish Campaign An all-time record for a semi-official opening of a philanthropic campaign here was set Wednesday night, at a meeting of top contributors to the Allied Jewish Campaign, at the home of C. William Sucher. The total subscribed that evening by 95 contributors was $2,048,000, the highest gifts running into $200,000 figures. This sum represents the regular gifts of $1,248,000 given by the same group of men, as well as renewal of last year's additional special gifts of $442,000 to the 1956 emergency fund and an additional sum of $358,000 to this year's UJA Rescue Fund. Max Fisher, campaign chairman, presided at the meeting. Mr. Sucher intro- duced the guest speakers, Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, executive vice-president of the United Jewish Appeal, major beneficiary of the Detroit campaign, and Dewey D. Stone, national chairman of the United Israel Appeal, major benefi- ciary of the UJA. Assisting Mr. Fisher in enrolling the contributors were Joseph Holtzman, a rational UJA chairman; Irwin I. Cohn, Louis C. Blumberg and Leonard N. Simons. The best-ever beginning for a Detroit philanthropic campaign augurs well for the 1957 drive, Isidore Sobeloff, executive vice-president of the Jewish Wel- fare Federation, stated. He expressed the hope that this assures the raising of Shocking Distortion of Facts About Refugee Problem the minimum goal of $6,500,000 set for Detroit's 1957 campaign. In his addwss to the gathering, Rabbi Friedman, summing up his 10-day on-the-spot investigation of the critical Jewish refugee situation in Europe and North Africa, declared: "It is my opinion that the greatest refugee crisis in more than a decade, created by the 'cold pogrom' of Colonel Nasser in Egypt and Communist tyranny in Hungary, is now developing in Europe and the Middle East. The year 1957 may see more than 100,000 distressed . and dependent Jews in flight from Nas- serism in Egypt, Communism in Hungary and serious dangers in other countries. "Nasserism is Nazism revived. Egyptian Jews are being denied every civic right. They are being subjected to a strangulation policy of calculated terror including midnight arrests, imprisonment, confiscation of business and belong- ings, and finally expulsion. "A total of 10,000 Jews have already been driven out of Egypt and it is common opinion that every single Jew in Egypt will be ordered out of the country by the summer of 1957. "The 1957 UJA must fully realize its Emergency Rescue Fund goal of $100, 000,000 to provide transportation and resettlement in Israel and other free lands for the hundreds of ,thousands of Jews whi, will be forced to flee from terror and conflict in 1957. American Jewry must rise to the fore and this monumental humanitarian effort must succeed," Rabbi Friedman conclude& - THE JEWISH NEWS F=201,- A Weekly Review Commentary Page 2 of Jewish Events olelt). 27 17100 W. 7 Mile Rd. —VE 8-9364— Detroit 35, February 1, 1957 Is Wrong, Confirm What Is Right' Editorial Michigan's Only English-Jewish Newspaper-Incorporating The Detroit Jewish Chronicle VOLUME XXX—No. 22 Correct What Page 4 $5.00 Per Year; Single Copy 15c U. Tuesday refused to corminent on a report that it cancelled an appointment with the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation for an examination of Prince Mashur, six-year-old son of King Saud, to determine his recovery from Polio. The State Department had made an appointment previously with the world-famous institute in West Orange, N. J., which is directed by Dr. Henry J. Kessler, noted physician and leader in Essex County Jewish activities. King Saud brought his son on his present visit to the U.S. expressly for the purpose of such an examination. However, it became known Tuesday that the State Department cancelled the appointment Monday. It is assumed that the step was taken after it occurred to State Department officials that it would be desirable to shield King Saud from Jewish contacts. Lurie Heads Israel Basketball Committee Col. Harry D. Henshel, of New York, chairman of the United States Committee for Sports in Israel, chairman of the U. S. Olympic basketball committee, this week announced the ap- pointment of Nathan Lurie as chairman of the local committee to assist in sponsoring the basketball game, on Feb. 24, at the U. of D. fieldhouse, between the Israel Olympic basketball squad and Michigan All Stars. UNITED NATIONS—The United States in an apparent shift of position, favors the adoption by the General Assembly now of a resolution providing Israel some as- surances against renewed Egyptian belligerency before Israel withdraws Its troops from Aqaba and Gaza areas. A spokesman for the U. S. delegation here declared Tuesday morning: "We have not closed our minds to action in the General Assembly prior to completion of withdrawal of Israeli forces behind armistice lines." The spokesman referred to that part of the statement made in the Assembly Monday by American Delegate Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., in which Mr. Lodge cautioned the Assembly against a "return to unsatisfactory conditions which helped to bring about recent hostilities." Mr. Lodge's statement, according to the spokesman, does not, however, "preclude action by the General Assembly prior to withdrawal." While a cooling off process was under way Tuesday, with a number of delega- tions, including Washington's discussing possible resolutions giving some of the as- surances Israel desires, Mr. Lodge's stand was seen as an encouraging step by many diplomats here, among them representatives of Britain and - France. C h r is ti an Pineau, Foreign Minister of France, conferred with UN Secretary General Hammars- kjold Tuesday and there was speculation that the subject of their talk may have in- cluded the "Israel-Egypt situation. The possibility that Mr. Lodge may h ave had in mind use of a UN navy in the Aqaba waterway to bolster the UN Emergency Force was seen here Tuesday and was not denied by spokesmen for his delegation. Mr. Lodge had spoken of the need to use the UNEF to separate Israel and Egyptian forces "on land and sea." Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel's Foreign Minister, pointedly refused an invitation Tues- day to attend Secretary General-Hammarskjold's luncheon in honor of visiting King (Continued on Page 2) Editorial Lincoln Would Turn in His Grave! New Israeli. Oil Pipeline: — International Photo A mechanical excavator for Israel's new pipeline across the Negev desert is now in full operation. When completed, this new pipeline will carry oil from the Aqaban port of Eilat to Beersheba, southern rail center, from which point it can be transported to the Haifa refinery. Engineers say it will be finished within six months and will be able to carry enough oil to relieve the Suez Canal situation. In this month of the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, of the traditional observance of Brotherhood Week whose purposes idealistic Americans desire to spread throughout the world, the attention of seekers of truth and justice must turn to the monumental United Nations building in New York. Our concern is aroused again by a famous saying of Abraham Lincoln: "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves, and, under a just God, cannot long retain- it." Abraham Lincoln would literally turn over in his grave if he knew what is happening today at the United Nations, where his ideals now are being sacrificed to false gods by the U. S. representatives. A small people pleads for the right to live—not as a matter of grace, but as a right. But so-called world statesmen are indifferent to Israel's plight and cries for justice. They are playing a game, and their dice are loaded. Freedom seems to have little value, as long as it is not backed up by oil deposits. And in Washington, the most absolute monarch in the world and the world's thief slave-holder gets our Government's highest honors. All for oil! Oil is important, but—must control of it be attained at the expense of little Israel, whose cries for peace are being stifled by international tribunals? Woe unto us if we can not solve human problems the human way! MARCH 27, 1992 79
