Churches Get Warning Geneva (JTA) — The Con- ference of European Chur- ches has expressed "deep concern" about the res- urgence of anti- Semitism and other forms of racism in Europe in a letter to its con- stituents. The letter, released after a joint meeting of its presidium and advisory committee here last week, warned of "the rise of xenophobia, racism, anti- Semitism, discrimination and urban violence directed against refugees. "People are exposed to violent attacks by `skinheads' and neo-Nazi groups," the letter said. "This rise of open or veiled racist attitudes and sen- timents clearly threatens to divide people within the countries of Europe, and fur- thermore, between Euro- pean nations," the letter said. "Nationalism, chauvinism, racism and totalitarian barbarism must not be allowed to rise again," the church group wrote. The letter commended member churches already aiding victims of racism and urged them to broaden their initiatives. Theo van Gogh, a film- maker, columnist and satirical author, was sued for making offensive remarks about a Dutch Jew- ish writer, Leon de Winter. He also told sick jokes about Anne Frank and concentra- tion camps. But in court he said he would stick to his brand of humor in the interests of free speech. He joked about aliens seeking asylum in Holland and called the public prosecutor an "ass." The Dutch Foundation to Combat Anti-Semitism has meanwhile sued Mr. van Gogh and other publishers of the Joop Klepzeiker Agenda, which carried two anti- Semitic cartoons by the French cartoonist Vuillemin. The cartoons, which are banned in France, jest about the persecution of Jews.
