As for kosher wines, the restaurant offers over 50 dif- ferent kinds. All this is a big change from the original Levana, which was a simple bakery and dairy cafe. Three brothers, Moshe, Avrum and Sol Kirschenbaum, opened the cafe 10 years ago. Five years later, they opened the present restaurant. "We graduated to a full- fledged tablecloth restau- rant," says Avrum. With its grey slate tiling, circular bar, and fresh flowers on the table — plus a separate room for private receptions — this is a sophisticated place that at- tracts a diverse group of patrons. On any given evening, they include couples, families, West Side regulars and foreign visitors. "Our clientele is so international by now that you can usually hear between four to five dif- ferent languages every night," says Avrum. He's heard recent guests speaking in Portuguese, Hebrew, Span- ish and Polish: the chief rab- bi of Poland has dined here when he visited the U.S. A number of Japanese businessmen are also now regulars. "They come because they like the kosher steaks and the generally high quali- ty of kosher food," says Joann Makovitzky. But most of the regular patrons, she says, are Jewish and kosher, although they'll often bring along guests — friends or clients — who are not kosher, to introduce them to the restaurant. "They know their guests won't be disappointed," says Ms. Makovitzky. Neither will Jewish travelers. Whether it's East Side or West, haute cuisine or down-to-earth cafe, New York's varied kosher restaurants prove that the Big Apple is indeed a culinary adventure. ❑ mi l LOCAL NEWS 1" Simcha Plans Fourth Seder Simcha, the organization for Jewish lesbians, gay men, their. partners and friends, will celebrate a fourth Passover seder April 12.
