I, Sculptures, Pots
At Swidler
Swidler Gallery will feature
new sculptures by Ann Arbor
artist John Stephenson and
functional/decorative vessels
by George Bowes, Cleveland,
Ohio, March 21-April 18. A
reception for the artists will
be held 6:30-8 p.m. March 21
Om which follows a slide lecture
by George Bowes at 5 p.m.
and gallery talk by John
Stephenson at 6 p.m.
Last September, John
Stephenson became acting
dean of the University of
0. Michigan School of Art after
teaching there for 32 years. In
his most recent series of ear-
thenware sculptures,
Ob spherical forms grow out of an
experimental process of using
removable metal armatures.
George Bowes uses func-
tional forms to voice concerns
about domestic and global
issues, controversy, and the
often passive role people un-
wittingly accept. His ani-
mated pots are covered with
decorative motifs, symbols
▪ and words on a mid-
temperature porcelain form.
His pottery connects with
historical ceramics whose ex-
cessive decorative surfaces
hold importance.
Currently a studio potter,
Mr. Bowes studied at Cleve-
land Institute of Art and later
•
at Nova Scotia College of Art
and Design, Canada.
Swidler Gallery is located
at 308 West Fourth Street in
the Washington Square
I Building in downtown Royal
Oak. Gallery hours are Tues-
Om day through Saturday 11
a.m.-5 p.m. For information
call the Gallery, 542-4880.
Lemberg Exhibit:
Sculpture, Reliefs
01
'
Lemberg Gallery will pre-
sent an exhibition of
sculpture and wall reliefs by
Beverly Pepper April 2-May
2.
Included in the exhibition
will be examples of columns,
wedges, ritual pieces and wall
reliefs. The wall reliefs are
sculptural, though Ms. Pep-
per could be said to paint
them when she lays on
patinas. They have a geologic
feel to them, a look that
evokes the movement of the
earth and sea.
Over the years, Ms. Pepper
has landscaped several out-
door sites, including one in
Dallas and another called
Amphisculpture — at an
AT&T facility.
Lemberg Gallery is at 538
N. Woodward, Birmingham.
Gallery hours are 11
a.m.-5:30 p. m .
Tuesday-Saturday.
