children. ". . The boys and
girls work together, there's a
lot of cooperation, they
develop nice relationships
with each other and I think
they learn a lot together. Plus
the experience on stage gives
them a lot of self-confidence.
It just makes for a nice group
of kids."
Family priorities, she says,
keep her from taking on more
than three or four shows per
year. "My family is my
primary concern. And even
the short time when I'm real-
ly concentrating on the plays
bothers me because of the
time it takes away from
them."
Since last May, when she
was diagnosed with a brain
tumor, Mrs. Advokat has
relied heavily on family. She

says the operation to remove
the tumor took its toll, but
"right now I'm pretty much
back to normal . . ."
She says external radiation
treatment was ". . . an ordeal
because for a while you're
radioactive?' The side effects
of the procedure prevented
her from being in the same
room with her family for
almost two months. That in-
cluded Evan, daughter Lani, <
8, and her husband Steve.
"I don't mind people know-
ing about it or asking ques-
tions about it. But I don't
want people to say: 'Look at
the job she's doing despite her
illness.' It wasn't that hard to
bounce back. Maybe other
people would feel differently.
But I don't want to be called
a hero." ❑
"Keep Your Sunny Side Up"
is being performed on Satur-
days and Sundays at the
Magic Bag Theatre in Fern-
dale. Performances run
through May 9. For ticket in-
formation, call 274-6685.
