"Buchanan's people want-
ed to give us our money
back," said Mr. Wolfe.
"They came over to us with
wads of cash and offered to
give us more than the tickets
were worth if we'd leave."
Rabbi Weiss purchased his
group tickets at $12.50
apiece.
"We were really shaken
because when we stood up
and held our signs, people
started jumping on our
group and tearing the signs
to pieces," Mr. Wolfe said. "I
had to pull the kids away be-
cause I thought people were
going to break out into a
fight."
Jewish protesters carried
signs like "Buchanan: Duke
without the white sheet."
Rabbi Morton Yolkut, who
attended Rabbi Weiss' 5 p.m.
press conference, said the
problem is that Mr.
Buchanan is seen as a legit-
imate candidate by the
Republican Party.
"The danger is that he is
going to eventually be em-
braced by Bush," said Rabbi
Yolkut of Congregation
B'nai David. "They will
come to terms and he will be
allowed to set agendas."
Mr. Buchanan picked up
108,733 votes, or roughly 25

percent of Republican votes,
in Michigan's presidential
primary Tuesday.
"I intend to do everything
I can to follow this man
around the country and raise
a moral conscience against
his anti-Semitism, racism
and defense of the Nazis,"
Rabbi Weiss said.
Mr. Buchanan has made
light of the Holocaust and
has described Hitler as a
brilliant leader. He also
suggested that "the Israeli
Defense Ministry and its
`amen corner' in this coun-
try" were the forces pushing
the United States into the
Gulf War.
Mr. Scoczylas said the more
Mr. Buchanan spoke on
Monday, the more "hatred"
he felt around the room.
"Women were yelling and
screaming. One told us to go
back to Europe if we didn't
like it here," he said. "It
really scares you to see this
kind of animosity. I tell you,
it was the last thing I ex-
pected."
