Jack Kemp
Blasts Buchanan

For months, Jewish
leaders have wondered when
a major administration offi-
cial would vigorously knock
the "neo-isolationism" of
GOP presidential candidate,
Pat Buchanan.
This week, Housing and
Urban Development Secre-
tary Jack Kemp provided an
answer to that question dur-
ing the Simon Wiesenthal
Center's national leadership
conference in Washington.

Attacking the Buchanan
campaign's theme of retreat
from global responsibilities,
Mr. Kemp said, "I don't
know how to take — other
than to speak out —the sug-
gestion on the left and on the
right that 'America First'
means we should not only
bash Japan, but bash Mexico
and bash Israel and bash
foreign aid and allies and
trade and immigrants."
Mr. Kemp referred to a re-
cent statement by Buchanan
that the America First
theme engages the hearts
and minds of American
voters.
"Why?" he asked. "Is it
some type of a call to some
form of tribal loyalty? Of
course, we put our families
first. Of course, we have a
right to put our country first.
But 'America First' smacks
of the same policies that
caused the problems of the
1930s and suggest that at
the moment of the triumph
of the democratic idea that
we're going to appeal to a
very small view of
America."
These words were music to
the ears of the Wiesenthal
crowd, who were in Wash-
ington to lobby on such
issues as loan guarantees for
Israel and foreign aid. ❑
