Bonn (JTA) — The highest
court in the German state of
Schleswig-Holstein appears
to have set an important
precedent last week when it
reversed a death sentence
pronounced by a Nazi court
more than 50 years ago.
The move by the district
court in Kiel was a symbolic
gesture that could open the
way to the rehabilitation of
many victims of the Nazi
judicial system, according to
State Attorney Heribert Os-
tendorf.
The death sentence was
passed on July 8, 1941,
against a foreigner accused
of stealing. He was executed
under a decree against so-
called "parasites."
Mr. Ostendorf said the
Nazi special courts sent 109
individuals to their deaths.

Jerusalem (JTA) —
Priceless treasures of
Judaica will be on view at
the Israel Museum here
beginning March 31, the
opening day of an exhibition
titled "Books from Sefarad,"
which marks the 500th an-
niversary of the expulsion of
the Jews from Spain.
March 31, 1492, was the
date on which King Ferdi-
nand and Queen Isabella
signed the Expulsion Edict.
The exhibition will remain
on display until after the
Sukkot festival in October.
Almost all of the exhibits
come from the vaults of the
Hebrew University's Na-
tional Library. They include
the original manuscript of
Maimonides' commentary
on the Mishnah, written in
Arabic in about 1165.
Other handwritten items
include a Bible dating from
1260 and a High Holiday
prayerbook from Catalonia
dated from about 1300. It is
illustrated with delicate
micrographic drawings of
animals and birds.
The exhibition and the
handsome Hebrew and Eng-
lish catalogues accompany-
ing it were organized and
prepared jointly by the Mu-
seum and the National
Library, with the coopera-
tion of the government's In-
formation Center.
It represents Israel's prin-
cipal salute to the anniver-
sary, which is being marked
in Spain this year with
major events in Toledo and
other former centers of Jew-
ish culture and by Sephardic
Jews all over the world.
