granting $10 billion in loan

Independent television
producer Neal Duchin of
Oak Park supported Mr.
Bush in 1988. He has since
changed his mind.
"I thought Bush was going
to be a continuation of
Reagan's record toward
Israel," said Mr. Duchin,
who voted for Mr. Tsongas.
"Now the thought of Bush
running this country for an-
other four years, without
ever needing to face the elec-
torate again, is terrifying."
Some people, like West
Bloomfield's Barry Lawton,
were so dissatisfied they
didn't vote.
"I'm not happy with Mr.
Bush and I voted for him last
time," Mr. Lawton said. "No
one is saying anything, but
they are all talking. There is
no one worth voting for."
Others, like Sen. Levin,
chose to vote uncommitted,
making sure the party of
their choice gets a delegate
to the summer conventions.
The Democrats will meet in
New York, and the Repub-
licans will meet in Houston.
"I'd rather wait until the
conventions and see who
there will be left to choose
from," said Rogy Alpert, an
election official at Oak
Park's fourth precinct. She
voted uncommitted on the
Republican ticket.
Democrats and Repub-
licans in Michigan each cast
5 percent uncommitted
votes. ❑

set to vote for Repub-

candidate Pat Buchanan.
"Only to protest George
Bush," stressed the West
Bloomfield engineer.
But then he accompanied
Rabbi Avi Weiss, the
outspoken New York ac-
tivist, to a pro-Buchanan ral-
ly this week in Sterling
Heights.
"It soon became clear that
Buchanan supporters didn't
want Jews there," said Mr.
Skoczylas, one of about 20
Jews from metro Detroit
who attended the fund-raiser.
"It quickly turned violent,
with Buchanan supporters
ripping signs from our hands
and shouting, 'Jews, get the
hell out of here.' "
