Born in Jerusalem, Hyman Adler was a child prodigy from a long line of chazzanim. By the time he was 10, he was performing with the great cantors from Europe and America. At his father's urging, Cantor Adler came when he was 17 to the United States. He worked in Maryland, Ohio and New York, where he met his wife, Ruth, with whom he would have celebrated his 57th anniver- sary last Monday. In 1948, Cantor Adler began serving at B'nai David, then located on Elmhurst in Detroit. He worked with three rabbis, most recently Morton Yolkut. Speaking at the memorial service, Rabbi Yolkut re- membered his colleague's benevolence. It was the summer of 1977, and Cantor Adler was about to go on vacation. That's when Morton Yolkut came on board at B'nai David. The cantor quickly cancelled his plans, in order to show the new rabbi around town. "Cantor Adler, I shall never forget your concern; I shall never forget your assis- tance; I shall never forget your special kindness at that time," Rabbi Yolkut said. Chazzan Adler was ac- corded numerous honors in his lifetime. He was national honorary cantor for the Jew- ish War Veterans, Israel Bonds Man of the Year in 1970 and received the Shofar Award. He also was honored by the Boy Scouts of America and served as ad- visor to the B'nai David Boy Scout troop and as a chaplain at the State Correc- tional Facility in Jackson. Though he performed before large crowds at the local cantorial concerts, Chazzan Adler was equally at home with small groups at nursing homes. "If you called him, he would come," Rabbi Yolkut said. "He loved people. Peo- ple loved him. Period. That's all that has to be said." An avid stamp and coin collector, Cantor Adler en- joyed traveling and fishing. He would often take a com- panion along with the lures and the bait, then sing as the two sailed across silky blue waters.
