Nyman Successfully Completes First-Ever
Friends Campaign

Meet Susan Ulanoff

Susan Ulanoff generously volunteers
her time three mornings a week to assist
at Resettlement Service. Susan's is the
friendly voice you hear when you call
about donating furniture to the New
Americans. She arranges for all donated
furniture and household items to be
picked up from the donor's home and
mails the necessary tax deduction forms.
Since December 1991, the agency
resettled almost two hundred New
Americans in the Detroit area and in
March 1992, over 80 newcomers are ex-
pected. These refugees arrive with all
their possessions in two suitcases and re-
ly on the goodwill of the community to
provide them with new, or good quality
used furniture for their new homes.

Jewish Family Service launched its
Friends of the Family Membership
Drive during the Summer and Fall of
1991. This was the first-ever indepen-
dent membership campaign in the
agency to help us meet the changing
needs of the Metro-Detroit Jewish
Community. We set a very modest goal
for this initial effort and have not only
met but exceeded it. We have received
over eighty five gifts, for a total of
more than $16,500.
We would certainly welcome addi-
tional gifts from our JFS INSIDER
readers and supporters! These con-
tributions will help us to continue to
provide the necessary services our clients
have come to expect from our agency.
A special Friends of the Family

Fund has been established for these
monies, and will be distributed with
board approval to augment and sup-
port programs in the agency.
Special thanks to Board Member
George Nyman, under whose leader-
ship the Friends of the Family Cam-
paign was developed and to Louise
Hacker, J.F.S. Public Relations/
Development Officer for its
implementation.
To those of you who have supported
our first Friends Campaign, a very
special thank you for your much ap-
preciated gift! If you are not yet a
"Friend of the Family", please con-
sider making a contribution—your
patronage is vital to the viability of our
programs and services in the community!

Two New Name Funds Established at
Jewish Family Service

The Mary Gussin Lakoff Memorial
Fund and the Aileen and Harvey
Kleiman JFS Friends Fund have been
established at Jewish Family Service.
Mary Lakoff, long time supporter and
faithful friend of Jewish Family Service
passed away in November 1991. She
served as the President of Jewish
Family Service from 1946 to 1949, and
since that time had continued to be
actively involved in the agency's affairs.
She will always be remembered by
her friends and acquaintances for her
warmth, commitment to doing her
best, and her humanity and concerns

for others.
The Mary Gussin Lakoff Memorial

Fund has been established in her
memory by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rich
and Mr. and Mrs. Gary Snyder.
Harvey and Aileen Kleiman have
established a J.F.S. Friends Fund to
benefit agency programs. "I am pleas-
ed to establish a Name Fund that will
benefit agency programs, after serving
on the Jewish Family Service Board
for so many years:' said Mrs. Kleiman.
For additional information about
Name Funds, please contact Louise
Hacker at 559-4045. ■

President's Message,
Jew's' h Family Service

hosting "Room for Everybody", a forum

Jewish world. The program is free to the

families came to our rescue, providing the
tickets and becoming the "family-to-family"
for this young woman, her husband, and
their 5-year-old daughter. At the Shiva
house everyone agreed this was a match
that had been made in heaven. Our
volunteers are involved, from answering
phones to welcoming a new family at the
airport, to providing medical and dental
care. Volunteers can make the quality of
life better for so many people. This is true
mitzvah work!
Resettlement Service will be honoring
our volunteers at a special evening program
at Congregation Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses on March 30, 1992. We invite you to
join us in recognizing and meeting all
these very special people—our volunteers
and our staff. We are very proud that last
month Barbara Nusbaum, a member of our
Board, was honored with the United Way's
"Heart of Gold" award for her volunteer
work in the community. Her dedicated
work with the new Americans was par-
ticularly emphasized.
Please think of us if you have furniture
in good condition which you would like to
donate or if you would like to join the
ranks of our dedicated volunteers. I look
forward to seeing you on March 30. ■

public, and is co-sponsored by sixteen

local Jewish organizations.
We have been involved with the
Michigan Jewish AIDS Coalition (MJAC)
since its inception. Agency staff helped
to plan the arrival of the AIDS quilt for
display at the Jewish Community Center.
A range of supportive services are of-
fered by the agency to people with AIDS
and their families. A member of our
Board of Directors and a staff member
will represent the agency on the MJAC
Board.
Jewish Family Service is working with
Jewish Vocational Service to develop a
series of workshops and a support group

for the unemployed that will combine
counseling, supportive services and voca-
tional information.
The staff of Jewish Family Service

recently provided bereavement support
to tenants of Jewish Federation Apart-
ments due to the passing of a resident
and to staff of Jewish Vocational Service
due to the passing of a staff member.
Agency staff were involved in the
establishment of Yad Ezra and we con-
tinue to work closely with this organiza-
tion. Ten thousand dollars in federal
emergency Management Administration
funds (F.E.M.A.) are transferred through
the agency to Yad Ezra each year, to pur-
chase food for the Jewish hungry

With funding from the Max M. Fisher
Foundation, we are working with the
Jewish Home for The Aged on a joint
program to provide enhanced personal
care services to the Group Apartments
for The Elderly (GAEP). This will help
to prevent premature institutionalization
of elderly who can continue to live in
this setting but need additional supports.
Finally, the strength of our family life
education program (FLE) lies in the
principle of co-sponsorship with
synagogues and other Jewish organiza-
tions. The results of our efforts have
been outstanding.
I am very proud of the outreach that
staff and board members-have initiated
over the past few months to provide ad-
ditional, much needed services and pro-
grams to the Jewish community. Only by
becoming actively involved and a visible
resource, can we truly fulfill our mission
of service to the community. ■
