Having explored the vine- yard and learned about grape growing, we go into the building that serves as office and wine-tasting center. Brochures about the wines are on the table, and on the wall is a framed menu of a White House dinner at which Hagafen wine was served. The wines that won White House raves have also been recognized by leading wine magazines and have regular- ly earned citations in premium wine competitions. "My goal was to make premier Napa Valley wines that were also kosher," says Mr. Weir. "There's an old perception that kosher wines are not quality wines. But it's finally waning as people learn to respect the quality of an individual wine and don't prejudge it." The Wine Spectator, a top magazine in the field, certain- ly didn't pre judge Hagafen when it recently evaluated 1988 vintage cabernet sauvignon wines in a blind tasting. "Our wine was among the top 10 out of 160 wines," says Mr. Weir proud- ly. "And the word 'kosher' did not even appear in the review." He takes that as a hopeful sign that the wine is judged on its own merit. "It shows that the wine has arrived as one of the respectd California wines." Mr. Weir didn't become a premium wine-producer over- night. He tells us how a kid who once recited the blessing over wine at Shabbat dinner eventually became a vintner. Growing up in surburban Los Angeles, Mr. Weir regularly enjoyed drinking wine on Shabbat and holidays with his European-born parents. Then, after earning a degree in sociology from UCLA, he spent a year in Israel. Next he traveled though Europe and visited wine-making regions. "By then I was becoming more interested in wine," he recalls. "It was an agricultural pursuit with a product that was becoming more appreciated in American society." Back home in 1973, he made an exploratory visit to the Napa Valley, decided to move there, enrolled in the University of California viticultural program and earned his degree in 1978. A year later, he founded Hagafen Wine Cellars. It's been growing ever since. In 1980, he produced 300 cases of just one wine. Now he's making 10,000 cases a year of six wines, which range in price from $6 a bottle up to $20 for premium cabernet sauvignon, winner of two con- secutive gold medals in the American Wine Competition. Mr. Weir naturally takes pride in the awards and recognition, but he also enjoys meeting the non-professional wine lovers who are delighted to discover high quality kosher wine — and to visit the vineyards where the pro- cess starts. "The most satisfying thing is the feedback people give," says Mr. Weir, who lives in a house across the road with his Israeli wife Irit — she has an acupuncture clinic in Napa — and his daughter Maya. "We set out a goal of making a quality product and also leading an interesting life for ourselves. And we're doing it." ❑ Emanu-El Sets 'ip To Israel Temple Emanu-El is plann- ing a family trip to Israel, Aug. 5-16. Rabbi Lane Ste- inger and Temple Educator Ira Wise will lead the group.
