NEW 1992 PLYMOUTH VOYAGER The Women of Maimonides Medical Society present 46th Annual Donor Day Tuesday, April 7, 1992 at Construction Comes To Halt Bonn (JTA) — Earth- moving equipment has halted temporarily in the Hamburg suburb of Ot- tensen, where developers are preparing the ground for a new shopping mall on the site of a Jewish cemetery and Jewish activists are try- ing to, stop them. Since March 2, demon- strators, mainly Chasidim and other Orthodox Jews, have picketed the site and interposed their bodies bet- ween the machines and the ground they are supposed to dig up. The protesters number about 150, many from Belgium with some from Britain, Switzerland, the United States and a handful from Israel. They have gain- ed worldwide attention for their claim that the cemetery should not be desecrated. They insist that although it has not been used as a burial ground since 1934, the cemetery contains the remains of at least 4,000 Jews and is therefore hallowed ground which must not be disturbed. Although the demon- strators succeeded in halting the work, a spokesman for the Ottensen municipality said the town had no au- thority to ban the $189 mill- ion project. Swiss attorney Berysz Rosenberg said he filed a lawsuit on behalf of the pro- testers accusing unknown parties of desecrating the cemetery. He claimed that the earth-movers have al- ready disinterred human bones and gravestones have been destroyed. A prosecution spokesman said the lawsuit would not influence the legal status of the property, which seems to favor the developers. The cemetery was all but demolished during the Nazi era. Two large bunkers were erected on the site during the war. After the war, the surviv- ing Jewish community of Hamburg sold the site to commercial investors and shops were built nearby. The property changed hands several times. It is presently owned by Bull and Liedike, which holds legal title and permits to build the mall. The Jewish community confirmed that it sold the land 40 years ago but now says it was a mistake which should be reversed.
