the glory days of the
Hashemite monarchy by ex-
tending his hegemony
throughout Iraq.
By appending Iraq to Jor-
dan, King Hussein would in
fact be fulfilling a longstan-
ding ambition of the
Hashemite monarchy, which
was founded in the desert
region of Hijaz, now Saudi
Arabia, in 1916.
The founder of the monar-
chy was King Hussein's
great- grandfather, Sharif
Hussein Ibn Ali, who claim-
ed direct descent from the
prophet Mohammed and
declared himself king of Hi-
jaz. His driving ambition
was to rule over a united
kingdom of what is now
roughly Saudi Arabia and
Iraq.
King Hussein is making
his bid to restore Hashemite
rule in Iraq just as time ap-
pears to be running out for
Saddam Hussein. U.S. offi-
cials are seeking to play
down the significance of the
arrival of six B-5 2s at
British military bases,
asserting they are intended
for participation in NATO
air-and-sea exercises.
British sources, however,
note that the B-52s are now
deployed at bases from
which they flew bombing
missions against Iraq during
the Gulf War and that the
bombers have been
augmented by a fleet of
tanker aircraft capable of
refuelling the bombers in
mid-air.
The coming weeks could
indeed by Washington's last
chance to clip Iraq's non-
conventional wings and,
perhaps, engineer the fall of
Saddam Hussein from con-
venient bases in Britain.
While the ruling Conser-
vative government is unam-
biguously pro-American and
would fully endorse the use
of British territory for fur-
ther U.S. military action
against Iraq, it is far less
certain that such coopera-
tion would be forthcoming
from a left- leaning Labor
government, which could be
in office following British
elections that are widely ex-
pected to be held on April 9.
Coincidentally, another
sign pointing to the possible
end- game for Saddam Hus-
sein emerged in the form of a
UN Security Council resolu-
tion late last week which
warned of "severe conse-
quences" if Iraq continued
refusing to allow UN inspec-
tion teams to preside over
the destruction of its
ballistic missiles, its
weapons of mass destruction
and associated
technology. ❑
