CLASS & PLASTICS

A Clear Reflection
of Quality

Mike Ruddy, history and
government teacher and
Model U.N. advisor, said he
underestimated the emo-
tional difficulty some of his
Jewish students confronted.
"I guess I didn't expect any
hesitation. We often take on
small, controversial
nations," Mr. Ruddy said. "I
wanted the students to come
away with an appreciation
for legitimate Palestinian
rights and an understanding
of how difficult it is to ad-
dress Israel's needs and in-
terests."
Jennifer said representing
the Palestinian side was the
hardest thing she's ever
done as a Jew. "By the end of
15-hour days, I was more
emotionally wrung out than
physically tired," she said.
"I had to be in character all
day, hiding my true feel-
ings."
Jennifer said she
deliberately wore her Star of
David necklace alongside a
Palestinian button during
the conference.
Daniel Wolfe, 15, of West
Bloomfield, and DaVid
Glazek, 14, of Birmingham,
also members of Roeper's
Palestinian delegation, said
the experience didn't
significantly change their
views on the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict, but
they admitted to feeling a
little more sympathetic to
Palestinian claims when the
conference was over.
"There's not going to be
any right or wrong," said
David, who is admittedly
pro-Israel. "Each side will
believe what they want to
believe and nothing is going
to change that."
Daniel said that as a
"Palestinian," he stressed
the need for peace. "I really
believe the Palestinians are
seeking peace," he said. "It's
good for nations to know
where each other stands." ❑
