Rabbi Menachem Schneer- son, 89, who suffered a mild stroke last week, has not yet resumed his public schedule. But, according to his spokesman, doctors are "amazed" by the rebbe's ad- vanced progress and have permitted him to sit up. The stroke resulted in a speech impediment and some paralysis on the rebbe's right side. But some of the motor function and speech has already returned. "The rebbe is working," said Rabbi Krinsky. "He is looking at his mail, respon- ding to requests from people for blessings and advice." Rabbi Krinsky attributed the Chasidic leader's recov- ery to "God's blessing, the rebbe's stamina, and prayers by Jewish people around the world."
