He only escaped because he didn't weigh as much as the horses that were chasing him when he went running across the frozen lake." Playing Motel's love in- terest, Tzeitel, is Sue Carson, also of Farmington Hills. Ms. Carson performed the role of the second oldest daughter, Hodel, 21 years ago. Describing herself as "a nice Catholic girl" who teaches at St. Fabian in Far- mington Hills, Ms. Carson doesn't find it difficult play- ing the Jewish character. "It's easy because I'm an ac- tress," Ms. Carson said. "The show is so well written that everything is there for you that you need to know right in the script." Cathy Zucker of Lake Orion plays Hodel, the daughter who falls in love with Perchik, the radical. "Hodel's struggling be- tween tradition and Perchik's beliefs," Mrs. Zucker said. The face behind Perchik is Sandy Rochkind. "My character represents some- thing different to this play than what the others repre- sent," Mr. Rochkind said. "He's a catalyst in the corn- munity . . . He is somewhat of a radical. He kind of thinks he knows it all and knows the right way people should behave." Rounding out the roles of Thvye's daughters are 14-year- old Alexandra Winokur, a freshman at Lahser High School who portrays Chava; Caren Paskel, a 13-year-old eighth-grader at West Maple Middle in Birmingham, who plays Shprintze; and 10-year- old Joanna Miller, a fourth- grader at Pine Lake Elemen- tary School in Bloomfield Hills, who plays Bielke, the youngest daughter.
