/PLEASE NOTE NEW DATE YOU'VE HEARD ABOUT IT ... NOW IT'S YOUR CHANCE TO SEE ... quoting another definition. In An Encyclopedia of Re- ligion published by the Philosophical Library, we are provided the following on secularism: make that once more the living source of Judaism. That's how we attain dig- nity and strength, in the Bet HaMidrash, in our schooling and intellectual pathways. Specifically a variety of utilitarian social ethic (named and formulated by G.J. Holyoake, 1817-1906) which seeks human im- provement without reference to religion and exclusively by means of human reason, science and social organization. In general that move- ment of protest against the dominance and control of human life by ec- clesiastical bodies or by religious faith and dogma which had its new birth at the Renaissance. It has developed into a positive and widely adopted outlook which aims to direct all activities and in- stitutions by a non- religious concern for the goods of the present life and for social well-being. It is applied derogatively by religionists to that emancipation of all depart- ments of life, science, philosophy, art, economics and politics, from central religious control which results in the fissiparous pursuit of specialized in- terests without any sense of the unity of life and which has initiated a crisis in the religious and cultural life of modern man. The Harwood-Cousens letter demonstrated the real- ism of secular sharing of Jewish responsibilities. Secularists always had leadership in Jewish movements and community life. The children in secular homes unquestionably have a right in sharing Jewish learning and schooling. In consideration of learn- ing, secularism and school- ing, we must invite em- phasis to the priority given in Jewry to the school as the Bet HaMidrash. We gather our cultural as well as spiri- tual strength as it is em- bodied for us as a dominant symbol in this definition by Ahad HaAm (Asher Ginsburg): The heart of the Jewish people has always been in the Bet HaMidrash; there was the source from which they drew the strength and the inspiration that enabl- ed them to overcome all difficulties and withstand all persecutions. If we want to go on living, we must restore the center to the Bet HaMidrash, and Avraham Harman: Emissary Of Dignity Avraham Harman, who died at 77 on Feb, 23, left legacies that match the giants in Jewish and Israeli leadership. There was im- pressive charm in his per- sonality which inspired those in our ranks who had the privilege of laboring with him from 1948, the year of his first diplomatic assignment to this country, to recent days. In the consular service, as a leader in Zionism, and as Israel's ambassador to the U.S., he evidenced courage that compelled adherence to basic Jewish appeals. He was truly the ambas- sador to the Jewish people with emphasis on American Jewry. His wife, Zena Har- m an , gained fame as UNICEF chairwoman and Israeli parliamentarian. His daughter Naomi heads the Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University. From Avraham Harman, therefore, stems an entire family unit that glorifies our historic records. To have had Avraham Harman as leader and friend since 1948 is to be grateful to have been associated with him and to have learned from him. 0 HEBREW FOR THE 21st CENTURY Sunday, March 15 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. e 7 ,18111111111 ..
