Aura Herzog
At Summit

Geneva (JTA) — Aura
Herzog, wife of President
Chaim Herzog of Israel, took
an active part in the summit
conference on the economic
advancement of rural wo-
men at U.N. headquarters
here last week.
It was a gathering largely
of Third World countries and
a few European nations, rep-
resented in most cases by
their first ladies. Mrs. Her-
zog spoke for about 40
minutes with Suzanne Mu-
barak, wife of President
Hosni Mubarak of Egypt.
"The atmosphere was
warm, as if we had known
each other for years," said
Mrs. Herzog. Their conver-
sation avoided political
matters. Mrs. Herzog said
Mr. Mubarak showed a lot of
interest in life in Israel; es-
pecially about women in
agriculture.
The conference was in-
itiated by IFAD, the U.N.
Fund for Agricultural De-
velopment, which is fi-
nanced heavily by Algeria
and is headed by an
Algerian, Idriss Jazairy.
Belgium, also a major con-
tributor, was represented by
Queen Fabiola.
But the major industrial
powers more or less snubbed
the IFAD gathering as if to
say there was no need for
another U.N. organization to
collect more money.
The United States, Ger-
many, Japan, France and
Britain sent very low-
ranking representatives.
In her speech to the con-
ference, Mrs. Herzog ex-
pressed hope that the peace
process now under way will
succeed and that "the Mid-
dle East will enter a new
phase, and we will witness
multinational cooperation in
our area to protect the envi-
ronment and to advance de-
velopment along the road to
peace."
Mrs. Herzog also had a
meeting with Queen Sofia of
Spain. The Herzogs are
scheduled to visit Spain next
month in connection with
the Sepharad '92 festivities
marking the 500th anniver-
sary of the expulsion of Jews.
She said the queen told her
she was keenly interested in
Judaism and was taking
lessons from the chief rabbi
of Madrid.
Mrs. Herzog said she had
hoped in Geneva to be
photographed close to Queen
Nur of Jordan. But tight
Jordanian security kept
them well apart and she had
to be satisfied with a smile
from the queen, she said.
