Boxing Judge Has
Anti-Semitic Record

NOAM M.M. NEJSNER

Staff Writer

ohn Moriarty, also
known as John Reich,
is a boxing judge and
has a neo-Nazi past.
Mr. Moriarty, 37, was
scheduled to serve as a box-
ing judge last week at the
Palace of Auburn Hills.
When the chairman of Mich-
igan's Athletic Board of
Control, Dr. Stuart
Kirschenbaum, threatened
to boycott the event, Mr.
Moriarty volunteered not to
work.
In a Detroit News story two
weeks ago, Mr. Moriarty
said he didn't know that the
group he founded in 1979,
Security Services (SS) Action
Group, was focused on more
than anti-communism.
"It was those darn
swastikas," he told the
News. "I never should have
worn them.
"I didn't really know what
they stood for, never ever.

"I can't see how he
can be impartial."

My whole being was against
communism. Some of my
better friends are black."
An Anti-Defamation
League file on Mr. Moriarty
reveals a history speckled
with anti-Semitism.
• On March 30, 1981, Mr.
Moriarty wrote a letter to
Southfield's City Council
declaring his group's intent
to stage a protest at the
Israel Independence Day pa-
rade. "We feel Israel has
stolen Arab land ... To
allow the despicable Jew to
steal this birthplace of the
Palestinian people is a crime
which should not go un-
punished," Mr. Moriarity
wrote.
• In 1984, Mr. Moriarty
was named a co-defendant in
a suit by United Features
Syndicate over SS Action
Group's use of Beetle Bailey
and Charlie Brown in their
literature. In one cartoon,
Charlie Brown bemoans
inter-racial dating, Zionism
and communism, concluding
that "racial purity is
America's security."
• Other SS Action fliers
praise Adolf Hitler, threaten
Jews with lynching, or "old-
fashioned American
Justice." Another blames
Jews for "minority crime, in-
flation and unemployment"
and said, "They are 90 per-
cent of our government and

by creating bad situations
they can further monopolize
and destroy America."
• In 1985, Mr. Moriarty
was photographed leading a
protest march in Farm-
ington for SS Action Group.
• As recently as two years
ago, Mr. Moriarty identified
himself as the leader of the
SS Action Group.
• In Blood In The Face, a
documentary about right-
wing hate groups, Mr.
Moriarty is shown with Ted
Dunn, another SS Action
Group leader. In a short se-
quence, Mr. Dunn says, "It's
not going to be the exter-
mination of the white race.
There'll be a bloodbath, but
it's going to be the
minorities who'll be on the
bad side of the coming con-
flict."

Mr. Moriarty replied, "It's
a proven fact that when the
white man gets mad and
gets organized, he's an
unbeatable force."
Mr. Dunn, "We don't get
mad; we get even."
Mr. Moriarty, "That's
right."
Mr Dunn, "This isn't the
Action Group for nothing."
Dr. Kirschenbaum, who is
Jewish, wants Mr. Moriar-
ty's boxing license revoked.
"I can't see how he can be
an impartial judge," he said.
"It goes without saying that
hatred and bigotry will af-
fect his thinking as a boxing
judge. What if you have an
interracial bout?"
Dr. Kirschenbaum's oppo-
sition to Mr. Moriarty runs
deeper than the issue of
qualifications.
"It's an embarrassment,"
said Dr. Kirschenbaum. "If
you license him, you sort of
give approval to his actions
outside the ring."
But without intervention
from state authorities, Mr.
Moriarty will not lose his
license.
Even if Mr. Moriarty keeps
his license, he may not work
since Dr. Kirschenbaum
usually decides who gets to
judge professional and ama-
teur fights. That, state offi-
cials say, may invite a
lawsuit.
The state, meanwhile,
cannot remove Mr. Moriar-
ty's license unless they
receive a formal complaint,
said Kathy Wilbur, director
of the Bureau of Occupa-
tional and Professional
Regulation. Until that
happens, Mr. Moriarty is
under no obligation to hand
in his license. ❑
