Michigan's Newest Oriental Restaurant

The customers choose any of
the dishes or create their own
platters . . . and the chef
(owner Dave Hsu) will
prepare them without
sodium, starch or MSG .. .
Fried rice items will be made
with egg whites . . . Only
thing necessary is telling the
waitperson that it is a health
dish and Dave will do the rest
. . . People also like to see a
menu with these words .. .
"All stir-fried and deep-fried
in cholesterol free vegetable
oil" . . . Lotus Garden is own-
ed by Dave and wife Massa.

BACK IN 1984, its butter
pecan ice cream was rated
fifth in the nation by a People
magazine poll . . . and some of
its dairy products also are
well-noted.
Give the credit to an eager-
beaver graduate fresh out of
Michigan Agricultural Col-
lege (now MSU) in 1940, John
McGuire, who showed up at
the Red Rose Dairy in North-
ville bubbling over with new
ideas and recipes for ice
cream, egg nog, chocolate
milk and other items.
Today, his dairy, now called
Guernsey Farms Dairy, run
by sons Marty and Hugh with
assistance of brother Paul and
several nephews . . . plus
more family members all over
the place . . . is providing
many good careers for as
many of his and wife Pat's
huge family as want to work
in the business . . . (14
children and their spouses, 42
grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren).
Come March 15 there'll be
a Guernsey Farms Dairy cow
for naming when the family-
owned and operated business
holds its bi-annual open
house and public tour, 11 a.m.
to 4 p.m., on Novi Road just
north of Eight Mile.
Entry blanks will kick off a
contest to name the Guernsey
Dairy cow . . . plus samples
and giveaways including that
yummy butter pecan ice
cream . . . Not much chance
to run out . . . plenty of scoops
for an army, but 49 other
flavors will also be available.
The name contest runs from
March 15 to May 1. . . . no
purchase needed to enter.
ALWAYS SEEMS like one
big party, especially on Satur-
day nights, at Excalibur on
Franklin off 12 Mile and
Northwestern . . . but the re-
cent one was a lot more .. .
and owner-chef Marty Wilk
with his staffers had all they
could do to keep customers
happy.
Eleven people wore head or-
naments a la New Year's Eve
in helping Lois and Harry
Walt celebrate their 30th an-
niversary . . . More folks were

feting the 34th anniversary of
Iris and Dan Diehl . . . and in
the rear section were 25
whooping it up at a wedding
reception . . . All this inside
the very festive Excalibur .. .
but this wasn't all . . . Else-
where wasn't- exactly quiet
. . . Excalibur was also cater-
ing two off-premises parties
that same evening . . . Kind of
a busy night but taken in
stride by the professionalism
of Marty and his helpers.
Suzy Marsh and Dan War-
ren are back on the band-
stand at Excalibur, Tuesday
through Saturday for some
good listening and dancing
entertainment.
NO MORE distributing
themselves of the popular
focaccia and cheesebread
items by Sila Pizzeria owners
Mike and Al Bsharah . . .
Kraft Foods fell in love with
the products and as of last
week started distributorship
at local supermarkets.
The 12 ounce focaccia,
shaped like a pizza and top-
ped with onions, tomatoes,
spices and very light
Parmesan cheese . . . and the
12 ounce old-fashioned round
cheesebread with its blend of
three cheeses and spices is
still made and packaged at
the Sila Pizzeria on 12 Mile
just east of Greenfield in
Berkley.
They can be found at one of
three departments at the
supermarkets . . . dairy, deli
or freezer.

SORRY, NO Diet Coke at
this Jewish delicatessen, "Jo
Goldenberg" on Rue des
Rosier in Paris . . . but good
traditional favorites of
pastrami, chopped liver and
borscht, says Carla Schwartz,
returned recently from a trip
to Paris and London with
hubby Howard and their
three youngsters, Erin, Kevin
and Andrew . . . Cultural dif-
ference in dining didn't stop
at the no Diet Coke . . .
8-year-old Andrew asked for
crackers with his chicken noo-
dle soup and was brought a
plate of matzah . . . (an idea,
matzah in squares or rounds
and the kids will love their
new crackers).

SNOWBIRDS VISITING
the Coral Springs, Fla., area
are discovering Dr. Deli and
the Salad Queen, opened Feb.
10 by former localites Joel
Siegel and wife Heather .. .
This was also the name of
their operation in Toronto
which they sold to be in the
warm climate . . . It seats 180
at 8203 W. Atlantic Blvd.
Joel's parepts, also formers
from hereabouts, Sam and
Rachel Siegel who moved to
Florida last year, celebrated
their 50th anniversary Dec.
25 in Coral Springs.
