strong support from the Jew-
ish community.
Other possible lineups
could pit Rep. Gary Acker-
man against Rep. Jim
Scheuer, Rep. Eliot Engel
versus Rep. Nita Lowey. All
four are Democrats. GOP
Rep. Bill Green could also be
pitted against Rep. Ted
Weiss, a liberal Democrat.
A similar situation
threatens California's
powerhouse Jewish delega-
tion, where a court redistric-
ting plan threatens Rep.
Howard Berman, Rep.
Henry Waxman and Rep.
Anthony C. Beilenson.
In Florida, supporters of
pro-Israel superstar, Dem-
ocratic Rep. Larry Smith,
are working frantically to
avert a new map that would
bend Mr. Smith's
Hollywood- Hallendale base
like a pretzel.
And in Michigan,
redistricting could push Rep.
Sander M. Levin, a Jewish
Democrat, into a face-off
with Rep. David Bonior, the
House whip who has often
been at odds with pro-Israel
groups.

Policy Makes
Some Changes

Middle East policy has a
way of turning the usual po-
litical assumptions topsy
turvy.
So it was with the Jewish
Peace Lobby, a group with
longstanding and unabashed
liberal ties. Last week, the
group released a letter from
260 rabbis calling on Dem-
ocratic presidential can-
didates to adopt as vigorous
a policy on Israel's set-
tlements as the Bush ad-
ministration.
That was not an easy pill
for left-leaning Jewish Peace
Lobby members to swallow.
"Quite a few of our rabbis
were reluctant to sign the
letter," said Jerome Siegel,
the group's president,
"because while they agreed
that Bush and Baker were
right to be forceful on the
issue of settlements, they
have such a distaste for this
administration that they
couldn't sign a letter using
Bush and Baker as a bench
mark."
The group had hoped — in
vain — that the Democratic
contenders would reply in
time for Sunday's presiden-
tial debate in Maryland.
"By sending this letter,
the rabbis have put on the
table a new and important
question," Mr. Segal said.
"Are the Democratic can-
didates, by their silence on
settlements, adversely affec-
ting the peace process?"
