Holocaust Conference

Israel Independence Day
Chairmen Are Appointed

Barbara Cook will chair the
Jewish Community's week-
long Israel Independence Day
celebration in May. The
celebration will mark Israel's
44th anniversary and the
25th anniversary of the
reunification of Jerusalem.
A past president of Adat
Shalom Synagogue, Mrs.
Cook is a member of the
boards of the Women's Divi-
sion of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit and
Jewish Federation Apart-
ments.
The anniversary week will
begin May 5 with a Yom
Hazikaron (Israel Remem-
brance Day) observance,
memorializing Israel's fallen
soldiers. A letter-writing cam-
paign will match Detroit
families with those in Israel
who lost loved ones in Israel's
wars.
On May 9, an evening of
entertainment will include
an Israeli-style discotheque,
gallery art show and cabaret.
A highlight of the week will
be the annual Walk for Israel

walk.
Ms. Wilson-Fink was an
associate chairman of last
year's walk. Mr. LaKritz was
associate chairman of the
walk and of Federation's
Human Resource Committee.
After the walk, there will
be family activities at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center, including
games, an indoor Israeli
street fair, crafts, exhibits and
entertainment. The seventh
annual Israel Quiz Bowl will
take place that afternoon.
Bus transportation to the
walk will be avaialble at a
small charge from the Jimmy
Prentis Morris JCC and from
the United Hebrew Schools
building.

will tell the story of his sur-
vival and how he came to
share it with the world.

JCCouncil
Leaders Elected

At the annual plenum of
the National Jewish Commu-
nity Relations Advisory
Council, Feb. 16-19 in Port-
land, Ore., Jewish Communi-
ty Council President Jeannie
Weiner was elected to a three-
year term on the executive
.committee of the national
umbrella body. NJCRAC coor-
dinates joint policy-making
for the 13 national agencies
and 117 local community re-
lations agencies in the United
States.
Following the plenum,
David Gad-Harf, executive di-
rector of the JCCouncil, was
elected chairman of the Na-
tional Association of Commu-
nity Relations Agency Direc-
tors. In addition to leading
this professional organiza-
tion, Mr. Gad-Harf will serve
as an ex-officio member of the
NJCRAC executive
committee.
Also attending the Portland
Plenum were Detroit dele-
gates Alex and Liliane Blu-
menberg. Mr. Blumenberg is
a JCCouncil vice president
and serves on NJCRAC's
Task Force on World Jewry.

Blacks, Jews,
Latinos Are Topic

"Inside Separate Worlds .. .
Life Stories of Young Blacks,
Jews and Latinos," a program
hosted by the American
Jewish Committee, Detroit
Chapter, and the Midrasha —
College of Jewish Studies,
will be held 7:30 p.m. March
12 at the Agency for Jewish
Education.
Dr. David Schoem, assistant
dean of undergraduate educa-
tion at the University of
Michigan and lecturer in
sociology, will speak. The pro-
gram topic is the title of his
recent book.

Sinai Health-O-Rama
In Detroit March 29

Sinai Hospital will host
Project Health 0-Rama on
March 29 at its main facility
in Detroit.
The community health pro-
gram offers free medical
screenings to individuals 18
years of age and older. The
screenings include blood
pressure, height and weight,
oral and dental screening,
hearing tests, vision screens
and glaucoma tests.
There will be three new
medical tests offered at Pro-
ject Health-O-Rama for a fee:
pap tests, mammograms (by
appointment only) and a test
for prostate disease called the
prostate specific antigen.
There are two other low-cost
tests: a blood panel which in-

cludes a cholesterol level
check and a take-home col-
orectal screening test.
Sinai professionals will be
on hand to offer advice on
nutrition, medications, Social
Security policies and other
topics. CPR refresher training
will also be offered.
Project Health-O-Rama will
be held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March
29 in Sinai's Zuckerman Din-
ing Room. Reservations for
the mammography tests may
be made by calling 493-5500.

co-sponsored by WXYZ-TV
Channel 7, Blue Cross Blue
Shield of Michigan, Blue
Care Network of Southeast
Michigan, and the United
Health Organization.

BBYO Will Host
Gathering Of Alumni

B'nai B'rith Youth Organi-
zation alumni — from all
years and all cities — are in-
vited to the first BBYO Alum-
ni Party 9 p.m. April 4 at Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek.
The gathering will include
hors d'oeuvres and desserts.
Guests will receive a com-
plimentary first year
membership in the Michigan
BBYO Alumni Association,
which is formally beginning
April 4.

The gathering is being
organized by Marla Parker,
Allan Feuer, Chuck Kessler
and Ben Waxenberg.
There is a charge for the
event, which is open to all
BBYO supporters. There will
be an open bar, but no one
under 21 will be served
alcoholic beverages.

Conference on the Holocaust
through March 11.
Poet Aaron Kramer will do
"Poetry of the Holocaust" at
9 p.m. March 6 at Hillel.
The area premier of the film
Korzcak will be shown 8 p.m.
March 7 at Hillel. This Polish
film recounts the life and
death of Janusz Korczak, the
Jewish teacher, doctor, and
writer who struggled in vain
to save 200 children. There is
a charge.
The Jewish Ensemble
Theatre will present a staged
reading of Born Guilty 7:30
p.m. March 8 at Hillel. There
